Hey Everyone,

So, what's the procedure to install EMV card readers for Aloha?
Does the software need to be updated?

Any help or links or anything at all will be very much appreciated.

Juan

Hay Juan

Here is a good read fast read regarding EMV

As for the card readers, NCR still based on there website have a solution coming. They have many blog entrees as to how it will effect you, but nothing else. You can with relative ease add a contact less card reader to a P1220. Using the internal usb the Udoc would use for connection.

Last I heard, NCR has narrowed it down to 2 devices they are happy with. I've also heard that TableSafe will work, but i'm not 100% sure on that.

Last I heard about TableSafe, their EMV reader wasn't certified.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the responses, as always!

So, what are you doing with your clients for now? Nothing?
I only work with one restaurant, but they are freaking out because of the liability issue.

Thank you again,

Juan

if they are freaking out that much have them get 3rd party credit card readers at each terminal and process credit cards outside of Aloha. The 1510 would not be PCI compliant as it runs xp and cannot run any newer OS.

The risk is only if you take a fraudulent CC that has a chip on it, the merchant is on the hook if they don't have the EMV reader.

A couple of suggestions:
Back up CCs with a license or even just back up chip cards with a license since that's where you'd be liable.
Buy EMV insurance. Mercury is offering 6 months of coverage up to $X on fraudulent cards if you're going to more to EMV when it's ready for you.

Hi guys!
I am revisiting this subject.
In one of our locations we already had two claims because we don't have EMV readers.

Have you guys implemented solutions?

Can anyone guide on me on what the most affordable plan of action is?

We have Table Service 6.5.25 with P1550 terminals running XP. Three locations.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Juan

Juan,
In Los Angeles this is becoming more and more common. I have 5 sites in the same boat as you. They went to there credit card processor and purchased external chip ready credit card terminals. They do not interact with Aloha.
The restaurant already had extra data wires at each station so they did not need to pay for additional wireing. Plugged 1 end into card reader the other into network switch with dhcp enabled.
I created 4 new payment buttons visa-X mc-X, discover-X and amx-X. All the server or bartender does when they get cards wtih chips is run them through outside terminal. In aloha they swipe them, but the payment button will not go to EDC. It will report as visa, mc ect and they can enter tips as normal for checkout. They must also enter tips into card reader. They also have to run a checkout on the credit card terminal

Pain in the rear, but still better than charge backs you cannot win.

Call me if you have any other questions on how to setup the tenders, or anything else.
one other item, think about doing anytime update from 6.5.25 to 6.5.56 and get edc to 12.3.5
Both are anytime updates

Hey Ross,

Thank you for always replying my threads.
I was just reading another post where you mentioned your experience at a Hollywood restaurant. This happened in Santa Monica, so we are definitely on the same boat.
We are asking the processor (Chase) to see if they can get us one of the devices you recommend.

I may call you at some point. Is it the 844 number?

Thanks again,

Juan

I believe the recommendation is 1530 terms and Aloha 12.3 for EMV. We are about to start rolling it out at my work once we are certified by NCR.

Hey Guys,

Here is a little update.
We use Chase Paymentech. They only work with ICT250 terminals.
We bought one for each location, received them, configured them, and noticed that they were not reading the EMV chip.
It turns out that Paymentech disables the feature because their system does not work well with EMV. It does not print the "tip" line, and it does not allow tip adjustments after the credit cards were processed.
So, basically, their system is useless! Unbelievable!
They suggested us to work like Dennis, having a cashier at the restaurant exit, so the person can indicate the tip before the CC is processed. Classy!

Anybody else running into this issue?

Any news on Aloha coming up with a solution?

Thanks,

Juan

Juan, the ingenico device Heartland has will allow you to do tips. Chase set you up for retail not restaurant. You could change your guest checks to have tip line added like a room service check. This way when presented with bill they can write in tip and give card at same time. It would allow you to keep the devices and have them work for you. You will still need them to enable the chip reader.

You mean I should contact Ingenico directly? I don't know what "Ingenico Decive Heartland" is.

Or you are saying we should move away from Paymentech and go with Heartland?

Thanks as always, Ross

For those that are curious, I spoke with the TableSafe guys today. The RAIL 2 device will be available around June/July/August. They are currently getting their PCI 1 and PCI 2 certifications, and next will be getting their EMV 1 and EMV 2 certification.

NCR's Options for Aloha are MX915 PCI 4.0, Verifone Vx820 PCI 3.0 depending on what you want to spend.
