How can I apply more space for/to drive C? Here is the problem. I have a Dell server with 3 HD's into one logical drive. The guy before me configure it as follows:

C: 4GB
D: 63GB

Now drive C: has 370MB free and it's getting very slow.I did move and uninstalled all I could but no good enough.

The question is how can I take 1GB of space from drive d: which has 10GB free and apply it to C: without loosing anything on C or D. Any help will be great.
Never done this before and I am afraid that I will loose all of it. TS and FTP are on this server.

It is very nice to be important but it is very important to be nice.

You can move the page file from the c drive to the d drive. If you havent already done so

Besides moving the page file, try uninstalling any unused programs or service pack uninstall folders you don't need any more (they look like this:
c:\winnt\$NtUninstallKB822831$)

You can try moving large applications to the d: drive also. If you're really desperate, you can use PowerQuest Server Magic to resize the partitions but BE CAREFUL. Make sure you're completely backed up before trying it, and if your server has a special system partition check to see if you can use Server Magic safely. (When it works, it's great. When it doesn't, you're screwed.)

Thank you both for the information. However all the programs have been redirected and I uninstalled all that is not needed.

If you have any othe rideeas please tell me. Thank you

Something sounds fishy. I have Win2k servers. I just checked my c:\winnt folder and all its subfolders total 1.5 gig, and I have lots of uninstall folders. 4 Gig should be plenty to accomodate an install of Win2k. You must have something taking up a lot of room. Try right-clicking on C:\WINNT and folders within Program Files and click Properties to see the total size of the folders. Or take a look in your temp folders to see if there are old temporary files that can be deleted. You'll probably find one folder that's huge.

Thank you for the info. However we have a web based database within the inetpub togetehr with FTP and documents and settings thats almost 1.5 GB for all of the TS users. There are no temp files. They have been deleted and I keep an eye on it every day. C:\WINNT is fine. There is nothing that I can delete from there. Most programs have been redirected to D as well as the page file

It is very nice to be important but it is very important to be nice.

Sorry if I'm beating a dead horse, but you can move the location of your ftp site and the web site containing the database to D:. That should do it.

If you're not sure how to do this, try copying the folders containing your database and ftp sites to new folders on your d: drive. Then use IIS manager to point the ftp and web sites to the new folders (or create a new web and ftp site to test). Unless your database application needs to be installed in the new location then the data migrated, this should work.

Thank you for the info. The database is in charge of our president and he does not want it moved or changed. He advised me to find other ways.

Then you'll have to rebuild another server and make the C:\ drive large enough for your needs, or take a chance with a Partition Magic style program.

It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.

This is just one of those things. I hate the fact that dell sent the servers with 4 GB of space on the C. They since fixed the problem and now let you decide on what size you want to allocate. The only way around this is to bring in another server. replicate everything over. fdisk the dell. Reinstall and repliacte everything back.

There is a utility like partition magic made by powerquest that is made for server to repartition your HD but i highly do not recommend this route. You will just run into problems.

Paul..

Welp, as usual management has tied your hands. If Win2k is 1.5 gig and your database is 1.5 gig (and you can't move it) and you have other standard stuff like Internet Explorer and standard Windows apps installed, you can't make any more room: you're already over 3 gig.

It looks like you need to use Server Magic. Make sure you have a reliable, tested way of restoring your server before trying it.

Good luck.

Thank you all. It looks like I am f----d and there is nothing I can do.Thanks for all support.

tell your boss to mind his business.

stop ftp and web and smtp service.. cut and paste teh whole inetpub directory from c:\ to d:\ then go into IIS admin and chagne the home folders from c to d: and your done.. oh yeah turn the ftp/web smtp service back on
