I have six Windows 2000 servers and all of them died after install the Security rollup yeterday. I am not able to boot them even in safe mode. Total loss of what to do! During startup they all die with mode_exception_not_handled, i'm not sure about the first letter the m could be something else it is off the screen.

Ouch, that must be painful. Did you happen to jog down the update number ? I installed all of them on my SBS2003, Windows 2003 Standard and Windows 2000 servers without any problems.

Are they all the same hardware?

If so contact the manufacturer or head to their web site and look for BIOS updates etc, this may be a known problem. I've seen similare issues with Dell 2800's and 2k3 server SP1.

Call your local (regional) Microsoft free hotline for support immediately. This seems to be their security rollup package causing the exception issue especially to your six Windows Server.

As such, I don't think they would charge you. It's possible to get your Servers up within 4 hours or even much faster.

Good luck. Please eep us updated. Cheers.

We had the same problem at our place, the main server crashed, after this upgrade.
I beleive it was overcome by running a chkdsk in recovery console, which picked up a couple of errors, then the original cd was put in to do a repair (which rolled it back to sp1) then we managed to boot it into safe mode to install sp4 - this doesn't complete properly, but you are then able to boot properly to run the sp4 install again.
I also believe that some hardware diagnostics were run first, but I'm not sure on the details on that.

We have left the rollup service pack off for now.

I was able to back the patch out and get the servers back up and running. Here is how I backed the patch out.

From the C:\winnt directory of the Recovery Console:
CD $ntUpdateRollupPackUninstall$
CD SPUninst
Type: batch spuninst.txt <enter>:

Has anybody else encountered this problem or seen a definite cause for it? I would like to do some testing before deploying the service pack, but if there is a known cause then that would be helpful in identifying potential problem areas (especially if it is hardware-specific).

Microsoft gave me a test scenario that I hope to be able to test this morning and I will let you know.

Sorry it took a little longer to test than I had hoped. I applied the patch the Microsoft supplied (not a patch available to the general public) and this did not help at all. As soon as I rebooted after applying the Security Rollup patch the machine crashed. Of course the machine will never get another virus if left in it's current state.

All the machines I had trouble with are Dell PowerEdge 1750's.
