Hi

I have to questions I hope someone can help me with.

1) When do I use All unassigned and when do I use the ip address.
2) What´s the difference with a virtual directory and a ordinary? I have managed to set up IIS, to test my own asp pages. I don´t use any virtual directories and it works fine. Perhaps it´s something to think about when to set up at server that can be accessed from the Internet?

Thanks
Lizzi

specific IP assignment is required if you are using SSL (https) or (as an example) you need to have an intranet site on the same server as a public site. But otherwise "All Unassigned" is fine and use host headers.

virtual directories are needed if you operating a shared user system (like geocities) where you need to give user access via ftp without allowing them access to the root site. Also virtual directory names can be an alias for the actual folder name or it could be a different site or folder in another site (on the same server) or even on a mapped drive on the server.
a virtual folder will also be running as independant application space.
but generally a directory with a default doc is all that is needed if all the folders are within the same site.

Lizzi,

the standard web directory is "and the virtual directory is "

the contents of the virtual directory can be anywhere your servers local drive. It doesnt need to be under the web folder.

Really nice specially if you want to establish different web sites that are not link together. Lets say different websites of your brother and sisters... It can be link or it can be totally independent with each other

Thanks Chris and Caddnima.

I´m thinking, if I just have and then want to create lets say four accounts to this site. Do I have to use virtual folders for the ftp? Is there somewhere I can read and learn more about this? I´v got IIS 5.0 -
A Beginner's Guide by Rod Trent but I think the book just cover the basics.

if you do a forum search for "multiple websites" and take a look through the FAQs, there has been quite a few threads where virtual hosting and setting up IIS for FTP has been covered in some depth.
