All of my folders are now read-only. Why?

I recently downloaded CPU Z from cnet.com. I made the mistake of being in too much of a hurry, and accepted some other applications that I did not really want. One of them was an anti-virus program called AVG. I'm not sure that it is the culprt, but now all of my folders are read-only. When I right-click on the desktop or a folder on either of my two hard drives, the option for new folder does not appear. My only option is to create a shortcut. When I view Properties on all my folders, there is a grayed out check in the checkbox. I uninstalled AVG, but the problem is still there. Now, when I save a file in an application such as MS Word, I get the message the I do not have the necessary permissions to do this. Is there anything I can do other than running System Restore to resolve this?

Thanks,
rbj

I would try System Restore, sounds strange, AVG should not cause this problem. Do you recall the other program or programs?

Many have stopped using CNET downloads due to these practices.

Thanks for the comments. I tried system restore, but was unsuccessful. I got the message that the restore was unsuccessful. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
