I need some help. For some unknown reason the entire domain with 15 HP different printers cannot print. First it was just one printer then a few NOW its ALL printer. I havae set printers up with tcp/ip port. Checked IP OK picking up DNS see's the server, Checked the mac address this OK. but when you try to print error message just says "test page failed to print" and NOTHING else. nothing in the queue. Have tried reinstalling printers from scratch, giving new tcp/ip port. Copied spoolsv.exe from another server, nothing. Rebooted server, nothing. You can install printer on workstation,it see's it on the server, but once you try a test page nothing. Now i am thinking a virus, but our virus checker is not picking up anything. Critical updates all up to date on server.
If someone could help I would appreciate this. Cause NO ONE can print. thanks in advance. SErver 2k, workstations 2k and 95

Hi,

What is the common denominator? How do the printers and server connect to the LAN. Is there a common component such as a switch or hub?

When you say "Nothing in the queue" is it because the job has left the queue already or is it because the job never gets there? These are all clues to the problem. Monitor the queue as you hit the print button.

Since all printers stopped working, something common is affecting them all. maybe something has been recently replaced?

I would also look at the port configurations for the ports used to support the print queues. I have seen some strange things when the port is set incorrectly. If you are using a standard tcp/ip port, then the port used for the print queue should Protocol: Raw and port 9100 for hp jetdirect print servers.

Some trojans can mess around and delete services. Could this be a virus/worm that spread onto your network that caused this? Maybe not, but check it out with your AntiVirus software and updated definition files just in case.
