All company cant see Win2k server in Network Neighbourhood

Hi All,

We have a server set-up in one of our remote offices, whilst you can connect to it via Terminal services etc
and browse to it using the NETbios name from the run command - or by I.P, you cannot see the machine under network neighbourhood. We only have the problem with this one machine.

Any Clues?

Probably not registered in WINS.
Check that it has a record in WINS database.

I just read about this (possibly). Do you think someone might have taken the server out of network neighborhood and hidden it?

Hide network servers

Hide network servers from the Network Neighborhood. Using either of the following options removes the server from the browser list. However it may take up to one hour for the server to disappear from the browser listing.

Option 1

At the command prompt type: net config server /hidden:yes
This does not require you to reboot the server.

Option 2

From the registry

Run regedt
Go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters
Add a new key with the following attributes:
Value Name: Hidden
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: 1 (1=enable, 0=disable)

When completed reboot the server.

If disable netbios over tcp/ip is checked under the WINS properties it would cause this exact problem. Look in the connection properties on the 2000 server. Under advanced tcp/ip properties\ wins tab.

Hi Guys,

Good ideas thanks - tried the Hide Server line with the reverse to unhide it - still no luck!

WINS is disabled on this server as we are running DNS primarily what with the whole of the office being Win2k

And Disable NetBios over tcp/ip isnt selected - enabled is.

Any more clues - all help appriciated!

Chris,

Uh you need some form of netbios name resolution to use network neighbourhood. Therefore either resolve by broadcast or WINS - you must be using broadcasts at the moment which is not very efficient. Check the node type on your clients to see how they are resolving names - just run ipconfig /all to see node type.

I would suggest putting up a WINS server or better option if on native WIn2k network start publishing all information in the AD and educate your users to search for resources in AD instead of network neighbourhood.

There's been quite a few threads on this subject here - just search for WINS and netbios should come up with some information.

You absouluteley need name resolution. WINS is a bit fickle, but you should consider using it. I wouldn't leave home without it. f not, hosts and lmhosts at the very least. You can also go into a browser as a temporary fix and try \\servername and see what shows up. Glen A. Johnson
