(I'm a Quark to InDesign converter)

I'm trying to find the simplest way to center my single object on the page automatically rather then calculate the math (size of the page minus the size of the object etc). Can someone help?

(In quark, there was an option to click "place object in center", is there a similar feature in indesign?"

A quick way to center in Indesign is to create a new frame with the Rect. Frame tool and make it the size of your page - place your object into the frame and use the fit to frame options under Object- Fitting and click Center Content.

...create box as suggested above, select both the outer box and the elements you wish to centre and use the align palette to centre vertical and horzontal...

...align palette is under window > object and layout > align...

...or shift+F7...

ok great thanks.....i kinda figure i would have to add a 'blank' box sized to the document size (hopefully an extension for indesign will be available in the future) save on 'object clutter'

If you go to View menu/Show document grid, you can simply align the middle of yur object with the middle line on the grid.

Using OSX 10.3.9 on a G4

You can also select your object(s) and, in the control palette, select the center of the reference point and enter half of your page size...so 4.25 and 5.5 for an 8.5 x 11 page. If you don't know what half of your page is, let InDesign do the math for you (enter 8.5/2 in the X axis and 11/2 in the Y axis.)

OR---you could just use the script AligntoPage that came with the InDesign disk, but you need to add it manually...it doesn't install with the app. Much easier!

Apparently that script is not included on the CS CD...all of the extra scripts that are included are in this directory: Adobe InDesign CS (or CS2) CD > (Adobe InDesign) Technical Info > Scripting > Adobe Sample Scripts...then choose AppleScript (or VBS on Windows) or JavaScript. Some scripts have an installer, others will have you put them right into your InDesign application folder > Presets > Scripts folder. I use the method mentioned above most of the time.

Anyway, check out the scripts that are there...they do some amazing things!
