[ul][li]Can someone send me the 'paper' skrandle has recommended on the differences between contexts and alias, and when to use each? woodrg @ frmaint.com (remove spaces)
[li]I've read in this forum if a context is created properly, there should be no need for the user to be prompted to choose. I think i understand that this is because when the SELECT portion of a query goes far enough into the alternate path, it is assumed that is the chosen path. Have i misunderstood this? What if there is only one table in each of the alternate paths? How can that context be successful without a prompt? Or is it that the database could/should have been created differently to prevent its necessity?[/li]
[li]If i create or accept an alias due to a loop, do i then have to create a class/object to get to that data in the new alias table? (i know its not a physical table, but rather an alternate 'pointer' to the original 'pointer') I've attempted to do this and have yet to successfully get to that data as related to the loop weilding table! I either get "identifier too long" or "table does not exist". A few tips in this area would be greatly appreciated as well.[/li]
[li]One more... when i read that the context might be a better idea, i backed up to the original version of the universe that had the loop. Instead i created a context and that did resolve the loop. but i was surprised that the same alias was previously recommended by 'detect loop' continued to be recommended by 'detect alias'. It happens that the tables it wants to create an alias for are not referenced by any other tables other than those that created the loop. So now that my loop is corrected, do i really need those alias'?[/li][/ul]
I hope this is not too lengthy, i have rewritten this probably 20 times trying to get to the meat of the problem and not inundating anyone with wordiness. There is a fair amount of history to these questions, and some may or may not be necessary. I can provide a crude description of my troublesome data structure if necessary, but i've been thinking that these may be basic 'how to' questions, and not necessarily issues peculiar to my data set up. I'm working in BO 5.1 and Designer 5.1. Our database is Oracle 8i. I am not the Universe Designer, but we've got problems and i've volunteered to research (no better way to learn right?) as our DBA is swamped and also has limited knowledge of the Busines Objects products.
Thanks in advance!
