I would like to have a file system on the RS6000 that a W2K server can Map. Is it better to use SAMBA or NFS with a PCNFS client? Are there compiled versions of SAMBA for an RS6000 running AIX 4.3.3.0?

Thanks

We done both. My suggestion is to use Samba, you can get it precompiled off the Bull archive.

Our experience with using NFS was that there really aren't any decent NFS clients for Windows.

Other benefits: no per-client licensing issues for NFS client software; desktop support will have a much easier time not having to support a "weird" application.

I've used Samba and a product called NFS Maestro by Hummingbird. The latter works very well and is easy to configure (although you have to pay for it). Don't recommend Microsoft Unix Services, we've tried that and had loads of problems. Samba is cheap (free). I can email you some basic config notes from our (limited) experience if you like.
Cheers,
John

Since the vote seems to be SAMBA, I would appreciate any tips or pointers on how to configure it.

Thanks!

IBM also sells a product called "Fast Connect" to allow Windows machines to use AIX file directories.

Hi Tod,
The config docs I have are probably a bit big to post here. How do I e-mail these? I can't find your address (or mine for that matter)
John
