I just thought someone may have some best pratice on Disaster Recovery for AIX.

I'm aware on how to actually do a DR in the case of total server failure, we use mksysb & savevg.

best practice:
get new box, boot mksysb, restore app data from backups, slow but works

You could investigate Bare Metal Recovery using Tivoli Storage Manager. If not with a view to using the product, then just guidance from their documentation. There's a fair bit detailed in the redbooks site.

There's a good O'Reilly book called 'Unix Backup & Recovery', which is worth a read ( it covers AIX ). Have a look at:

You could read it cover to cover while you wait for those ideas from 'some' forum. [thumbsdown]

Eh... have server(s) in a HA cluster, have a duplicate pair of HA servers nearby (but not same building). If you have a db, do hard sync of writes to duplicate disk frame on the standby pair. Might want to use something nice and fast like fibre, EMC Corp has a booklet for you. =) So when first pair dies in a horrible tragedy you have db and redo logs in the other pair, nearby but hopefully a few city blocks away. You want to have duplicate tape library and backup/recovery system in case you get db corruption during the disaster, so you can restore to a known-good point-in-time. Or see what SunGard Corp can do for you as far as hosting a DR site.

Just opinion, I could be wrong.

gheist, if you can't think of anything useful to say, don't say anything.

mkharris, Thanks I've read it

yegolev, In an ideal world your solution would be nice

I've been a aix admin for over ten years now, so I know all I need to know about backups/restores. What I'm after is something to keep the bean counters and auditors happy, and I can't be bothered writting a doc, that nobody will ever read, so I was wondering if anyone already had such a thing. ;-)

I think I could help you, had to do something similar for the beancounters too. You will have to modify though, our network is looked after by AT&T and hardware by IBM under contract, so there isn't much to it from a sysadmin viewpoint. But at least it will give you something to work with...

How can I get it to you, it's in Word format? IBM Certified Specialist - MQSeries
IBM Certified Specialist - AIX 5 pSeries System Administration

That's very nice of you aixmurderer, word would be good, can you send it to mrn@hotmail.com

Oh, I see... sorry! I didn't understand the question, my bad. Did not intend to insult your acumen. Not sure how to keep beancounters happy other than keep them in the dark, which is accomplished through documentation, as I am sure you know. I do not know who came up with our DR requirements and the various SLO/SLAs for the different functional areas, but there is quite a bit of documentation and it was here before AIX was. UNIX is a latecomer here so we have generally ridden on mainframe-coattails for this sort of thing. None of it is a simple document, really, and if there actually is a upper-management-pictogram, I have not had the pleasure of seeing it. Again, I missed the direction of the question, sorry.

By the way, that's the setup we are using (in general), so you don't need perfection, just lots and lots of money... and a good pitch-man for the IT group. =)

aixmurderer,

Could you also send that document to me?

Thanks
