I've got a single proc. (166MHz and 128MB) and after the POST it says: Welcome to AIX; and list's all the proc. and memory info, then says: Closeing stdin and stdout... and just hangs there. It does scroll some codes across the LED for awhile but then goes blank only to do nothing. I've got the install disk for 4.2.1 and have tried to install it but get the same error when doing so. It has 2 4.5 Gig drives in it if that helps...

Unplug the scsi device and see if it boots....or check the cable or address........See below... lsdev -Cs scsi lsdev -Cc adapter lsdev -Cc disk

Cannot access a device
Possible Causes

You specified the wrong connection address to make a device available.
The device that you are trying to add is not attached to your system or has hardware problems.

Procedures for Recovery

Check your device to make sure that you entered the correct connection address.

If your device is connected to a SCSI card, the number is on the back of the device.
This number is a single-digit number. In order to convert it to a connection number,
add a 0 (zero) digit to this number; that is, if the number is 1(one), the connection
number is 10, and if the number is 2, the connection number is 20.

Check to make sure that no other device attached to the SCSI card has the same
connection number as your device.

Use the lsdev command to check the connection numbers of the device attached to
the SCSI card. If there is one number that matches your connection number, change
the number on the back of your device to a unique number.

If you are using SMIT, return to the SMIT screen where the error occurred and enter
the appropriate connection number. Otherwise, reenter the mkdev command with the
appropriate connection address.

If your device is connected to a serial port, check to see if it is plugged in to
the correct serial port, then rerun your command.

If you suspect there is a hardware problem:

1.Check your cables to make sure that they are attached correctly.
2.Check to see if your device is turned on.
3.Run diagnostics by using the diag command.

My penny - It sounds like it cannot find the console, probably the display card to blame.

I would try attaching a terminal of some sorts to the serial port and then reboot, you should see a startup screen asking you to enter 1 (or something like that) to make it the setup console. (excuse the vagueness, this was a few years ago since I have done this)

I do remember you had to set up the terminal as 9600-8-N-1 for it to work. You will need a null-modem serial cable if you want to use your PC via a terminal emulation program. I prefer to use Netterm, it's quite configurable and even supports IBM3151 terminal emulation if so required.

Hello all again,

I am having continual problems with trying to get this machine to work. At startup, the machine (hooked up to a wyse 50+ terminal), doesn't recognise any F keys. It is as if cannot map these keys. I have tried inserting an installation CD for AIX, but the system just gets to FEB on the LCD and the hard drive LED goes mental or slowly flashes (when a floppy is inserted).

So I am stuck with a blank terminal display that doesn't recognise any F keys?

yours in hope,

John

I have a similar problem. Aix installed successfully and boots all the way up. I can telnet into it. I'm trying to install a video card after the bos is installed through telnet but keep getting errors saying the device is dependent on an attribute which does not exist.
any help?

I guess I am confused as to what your problem is aixgogo?
You have an ibm3151 or wyse50 or some ascii console currently, and you
are trying to add a graphics card? So you load the graphics drivers for the card and X11, before you put the new card in...............shut machine off and then put graphics card in and correct monitor and keyboard and boot into service mode and change the console?
in smit from tty to lft? chcons -a login=enable /dev/lft0

---------------------------------------------------------------
You can turn graphics off at the console if you have loaded them......until you
get everything else loaded?

This will turn graphics off on the console only:

cp /usr/dt/config/Xservers /etc/dt/config/Xservers
chmod 755 /etc/dt/config/Xservers

vi /etc/dt/config/Xservers

put a # in front of last line

# :0 local local@console ......

To turn graphics off for all users:....

/usr/dt/bin/dtconfig -d (for disable on next reboot)

Useful flags with the dtconfig are -e (for enable) -reset (for reset) and -kill
(for kill now) the e flag is to enable graphics on the next reboot.

If you are running xdm...the process is
/usr/lib/X11/Xdm/Xdmconf -d (for disable on next boot) and -e (for enable on
next reboot) You can run one or the other, not both.
----------------------------

Please let us know what your exact problem is and what you are trying to do? You might open a new call...........so it is easier to follow.....

Another 2 cents... be sure to place the gfx card in the correct slot accoring to machine/model. See your Adapter Placement Guide book. Usually this is slot 3 for PCI machines, but it has been a few years since I built one of these things.

As for F keys, proper emulation is important, however since I almost always use an IBM3153 it is not generally an issue and I am quite ignorant of such things. My guess: check your teminal to see if it can emulate "ibm3151".

Thanks for the reply. Here's my situation.
We have a F50 box with AIX4.3.3 installed. It already had a gxt800P graphics card installed but not working. The machine would boot and the console would display only so far and then the display would freeze, meaning it kept showing the same thing. The F50 continued to boot all the way up, I can telnet into it. Through smitty I look at the devices and the card shows up as smint0 and is defined. I run cfgmgr and get this :
# cfgmgr
Method error (/etc/methods/cfg_smint -l smint0 ):
0514-033 Cannot perform the requested function
because the
specified device is dependent on an
attribute which does
not exist.
Method error (/etc/methods/cfglft -l lft0 ):
0514-032 Cannot perform the requested function
because the
specified device is dependent on another
device which does
not exist.

I tried to reinstall the device drivers but get the same message. I rmdev the device and reinstall and get the same message.
I've tried three different cards of the same type with the same results. It is in slot 3.
I don't know the history of this machine or how it got in this state, just tring to help them out.
I might try a different card altogether.
what do you think?

On the device drivers what do you have installed for the gxt800p?

devices.pci.14105e00 ALL
+ 4.3.3.0 AIXwindows GXT800P Graphics Adapter Software
+ 4.3.3.0 GXT800P Graphics Adapter Diagnostics
+ 4.3.3.0 GXT800P Graphics Adapter Software

lslpp -l | grep devices.pci.14105e ?

you have the devices.pci.14105e00.X11 and
devices.pci.14105e00.rte and
devices.pci.14105e00.diag all loaded?

and all the X11 filesets?

And you have the right cable plugged into the card?

I do have everything loaded and the proper cabling. Have the proper processor cards, and the graphics cars in slot 3 with 1,2 and 4 free.
Thanks.

I finally fixed the problem.
First I upgraded the sytem firmware and service processor firmware.
There were many micro channel device files installed , for what ever reason. So went through and uninstalled all the defined devices.
The /var log file was full, so fixed that.
Reinstalled graphics card successfully, everything works.

Have a 7025 F50 and the system hangs on bootfile.exe. With a standalone diagnostics cd installed the system booting off of the cdrom with the correct scsi id will not run. Earlier in the process was able to restore from mksysb to the hard drive after booting off of the install cd but now the system sticks and the error code 4B226110.

Have disconnected power and popped the cmos battery out and the firmware and flash is at the latest version.

Have popped the hard drive and the tape drive out leaving the cd rom as the only scsi device in the chain but so far no "love".

Also while 1 seems to bring up the service menu 5 does not appear to do anything.

Using ibm3151 screen.
