I've got a single proc. (166MHz and 128MB) and after the POST it says: Welcome to AIX; and list's all the proc. and memory info, then says: Closeing stdin and stdout... and just hangs there. It does scroll some codes across the LED for awhile but then goes blank only to do nothing. I've got the install disk for 4.2.1 and have tried to install it but get the same error when doing so. It has 2 4.5 Gig drives in it if that helps...

What codes are showed on the operator panel?
I hope it works...
Unix was made by and for smart people.

It's seems like the NVRAM's bootlist for normal boot don't has an entry for the boot disk (blv), normally hdisk0.

Some extraneus behaviors are related to NVRAM. Please remove the power cords, open the machine, locate the CMOS battery and remove for a while (clean the nvram), then replace normally, close all covers and restart the system again...

Good luck,
Flavio Mostini

The last code that it goves is '0000' that is on the second line. I do not remember what the one above it is though. But once the '0000' is on the display the hard drives has already stopped reading.

Ok, I got home and pulled the battery for 20 or so minutes. And when I plugged it back in it never gave 'OK' on the display. So, I powered it on only to get the same message. I have an extra 9.1 Gig SCSI drive so i took out the 4.5's and put that one in and tried to reinstall. I wwnt into the SMS and choose install from the CD-ROM and chose 4.2.1 and it rebooted and is now at the same screen as before. Welcome to AIX and the time stamp and stuff. Also boot device: /pci@fef00000/scsi@c/sd@4 : \ppc\chrp\bootfile.exe is what it says it is booting off of I think. The last thing on the display is 0c42 and 0c31. When I shut it down it did give me an 'OK' on the display... Where can I get the new SP images and the new system images? It also hangs my KVM switch when the system hangs...

I am very well versed in the PC world and am learning HP-UX at work. I would really like to get into AIX though... Is there some kind of 'boot' floppy that I can make?

IoN6,

So you are saying that the system actually installs AIX 4.2.1 and on reboot it hangs or it hangs when you boot of the cd and get to the installation menu's?

Have you tried AIX 4.3.3?

Cheers

RS/6000 F50 (7025-F50) can use either 4.2.1 or 4.3.x AIX version.
If the display blanks out after boot (and the c31) that means the system boot sucessfully.

Two tips:

1) Connect a PC with HyperTerminal or ProComm with a RS/232 Cable (cross cable) -> Serial1 Port. F50 as I remember has 3 Serial port at rear. Setup terminal emulator at 9600bps, 8Data, 1 Stop, No parity, vt100. You may get the console on that terminal.

2) Check to plug directly keyboard, video and mouse. (Bypass the KVM switch).

One question: How do you shutdown the system to get OK on the display?

No, at the 'POST' screen I press F1. It takes me to the System Management ?Setup? (SMS) I do not rmemeber that last word... But I can veiw the curent config and such. There is an install option. I took the 2 4.5gig drives out and replaced them with a 9.1gig to see if it may be a drive related issue. I did get farther than I did with the 4.5's. When I choose to boot off the CD the system rebooted and gave me the same screen as it did before with the 4.5's. But this time the Loading AIX screen was at the top, instead of having the POST screen at the top... The screen never changes it stops on closeing stdin and sdtout... So to answer your question PSD, no I never get any installation menu's and as far as I can tell nothing ever gets installed...

And after about 3-5 minutes of the system sitting at that screen it hangs my KVM. And to 'shut it down' all I can do is power it off. When I do that it scrolls some stuff on the display and then says 'OK'.

Does it matter which COM port I hook up the cable to?

Also after I tried FlavioAR's idea I was able to set the IP config for the built on interface. But it never established a connection and I could not ping the address.

Is there any way to get a 'boot' floppy or diag disk to check the hardware?

In your last question, yes, you can boot from Diagnostic CD.
The serial port uses standar terminal asycronous (teletype) communication: no PPP, SLIP, etc. AIX try to find a working console in sequence: first graphics adapter (know as lft) then serials ports 1, 2, etc.

It's very strange... Another way is boot the AIX install CD in "maintenaince" mode: Put CD' and when the system "beeps" press F5. Thus the firmware boot from alternate devices: Tape, CD, floppy.

You will be directed to Install menu (text screen green/black). choose modify options and select both disks as target.

Ok, But is there a disk / option where I can configure the drives? I would like to mirror the drives. But have not seen a place to configure such.

Flavio, Is the screen that you are talking about like the one when you press F1 at the 'start up' screen that takes you to the SMS screen? I know that in there is an option to 'install' and when you chose it it askes you which devie to install from. Also is there anything else that I can do when I press F5 after the 'beep'?

Also I only have the 1st install disk for AIX 4.2.1 and am wondering if I need the 2nd one as well. I know in some versions of linux you can get by with just the 1st disk.

Thank you all so much for your help!!!

I am really confused on where you are or are not...
Did you get it loaded? What do you have as a console..(yes port is important as is what type of console, cable, ...and what baud rate and 8 1 N etc) .....What type of machine is it? PCI I assume?

You said you configured IP it sounds like you are up?.........Maybe we should start from the beginning...not to imply that you did not follow the steps...but check out the link below for loading your machine...

Here is a link on how to install AIX on your machine...

In answer to your question there are things on install disk 2 that make the install complete. Some get by with one CD but not advised.

Also to mirror you put both disks in the same volume group......AFTER you have installed the operating system...........and then type smitty mirrorvg
But if you are not up, there is no point and worring about mirroring..........

I hope the above will help you........or at least make me less confused.

Ok, from the beginning. I am a total AIX n00bie. I have some HP-UX experience and alot of NT/2k. I have recently aquired an RS/6000 7025-F50. It is a PCI/ISA system with (1) 166MHz processor and 128MB RAM. It has a Matrox Video card in a PCI slot. It also has 64bit PCI slots but none of them are being used.

The IP config that I said that I did was after I pulled the CMOS battery, like FlavioAR said to try. And when I saw the boot screen it took me to a config section. And in there was a place to setup the network interface. I set it up and save the config. There was also a section to 'test' the network with a PING, I did and it failed...

As of right now I CAN NOT get to a command line or prompt. The system boots and I see the POST screen. (I am not sure on the correct terms in the RS/6000 world) After that, at the bottom it says welcome to AIX 4.2.1 and lists all the machine info. And then it 'thinks' and gives a line that reads: Closeing stdin and stdout...

The above message is the last thing that happens on the machine. I've let it sit for over an hour and the only thing that happened was it locked up my KVM switch. I had to just power down the system...

As far as a 'terminal' goes I have my monitor hooked up to the Matrox card in it. And just a regular keyboard and mouse.

That is the only thing that I can think of. It also has a DDS2 tape drive in it and some kind of Digi board. I am planning on taking the Digi board out. If you need any more info please tell me what to look for...

Thanx again for all your guys' help!!!

Well any non AIX video card will probably not work...
Can you take the card out and attach a Vt100, ibm3151 or ibm3153 or pc to the
s1 port in the back of machine without the video card...?

My guess is that the OS is installed...but it cannot get to the video.....
and it is probably trying to run install assistant, which is a graphical thing, but it cant because of the unsupported graphics card?

If you can load it and run it with a plain old crummy vt100.......at 9600 8 N 1
you might see a screen pop up...... and then you can disable install assistant and welcome from the inittab........

But try taking that card out........and also using a plain ascii device. If it comes up and loads...you know it is your graphics card.

C31 means cannot find terminal
and the c42 usually means it is looking for drivers in the diskette drive

IBM is so picky on what graphics drivers are supported in the F50...I have not
heard of the Matrox card...but my guess is it is not IBM...and that could be your
problem............

Good luck

Ok, as I've said I am a n00bie at IBM hardware. But when you are talking about a 'terminal' you mean a hyperterm connection or a 'console' like in HP-UX based systems? And for the cable for hyperterm it is just a straight through cable right?

Thanx again!!!

i believe that when you say "terminal" - there's two possible answers here.

1. graphical terminal (usually an lft) - i.e., ibm P76, ibmG51,etc., which is directly connected to a graphic card (controller) of the system.

2. ascii - say ibm3151, ibminfowindowII3153, etc. which can be connected to box' native serial ports and other async ports (RAN).

correct me if i'm wrong.

Ok, but someone mentioned that I can open a hyperterm window and use it that way? Is that correct? And if so what kind of cable do I need?

If you are using an infowindow ascii display or something like that the cable you will need is an IBM terminal cable. A standard serial cable will not do.

You need to have wires 2+3 twisted, 4+5 twisted, and 6+8 -> 20 in both directions.

Basically reading through this post, the c31 is the obvious thing as this indicates that you don't have a valid console on your system.

Yes you can sometimes use a pc attached to the serial port....(not graphics card)
with a cross cable and the pc set as a dumb terminal 9600, 8 1, N

1) Connect a PC with HyperTerminal or ProComm with a RS/232 Cable (cross cable) -> Serial1 Port. F50 as I remember has 3 Serial port at rear.
Setup terminal emulator at 9600bps, 8Data, 1 Stop, No parity, vt100. You may get the console on that terminal.
As FlavioAR said above....

And by terminal I did mean console... like a dumb terminal......

And newbies are great....everyone has to start somewhere....Hang in there.

We have installed AIX 4.3.3 successfully, however refuses to see to additional disks which are attached to a SCSI RAID CONTROLLER. Trying to configure via smit gives:

Method Error (/usr/lib/methods/cfgscraid:
0514-047 Cannot access a device

We tried rebooting and now we cannot get to the console prompt. It seems to hang on 'closing stdin and stdout.

If anyone can shed any light on this, t'would be GREAT!!
