TEXT BOX MESSAGE:
When I try and open up any tables or forms in Design View, I get the following box that pops up:
You do not have exclusive access to the database at this time. If you proceed to make changes, you may not be able to save them later.

Also, when I open up a table to implement the primary key suggestion I received yesterday, I get this message:
(In bold letters)
You can't open the table 'CellChem' for modification.

(normal font)
A query or form bound to the table is open, you may not have permission to open this table in Design view, or another user has the table open.
Do you want to open this table as read-only? (etc)

First, I'm the only user using this database. I can't edit the form it's bound to, b/c it won't open up in design view either. How can I get control of my database back?

Well, the first question is, have you tried using the Shift+Enter on the icon for your database? This will bypass the startup settings and allow you to operate your database normally in most cases. You'd then need to look at your settings. Go to tools, startup. Also check the switchboard manager and see what mode (Add or Edit) you open things in.
I think this will allow you to get what control you need. There are all kinds of ways to limit access/controls so this might not cover everything. John, I've been bad

Also, you can be sure to open the database exclusively by opening Access and clicking the File, Open. Then clicking the down arrow on the the 'open'button and selecting open exclusive.

Chris,
I don't see the option you described to open exclusively. Also, when I looked for the switchboard manager, i wasn't able to find that either.

Ok, you might not have a switchboard, but you should still be able to see the manager. What version of Access are you using? If it is 2000, open Access through the Access icon (that is make sure it is not opening a database file, but just Access). Click on File, Open. There is the screen with the file navigation at the top and the bottom has two lines:
________
File Name: [_________________] | Open |v|
________
File Types:[_________________] | Cancel |

The 'v' represents the down arrow. In A2k, it should be there. If you are using another version, post which one.
Did the shift-enter on the database file do nothing? John, I've been bad

A2k is what i'm using...ok, so I got that open exclusive thing to work, but it says that either someone else has the file open (i'm going to go look into that) or I don't have permissions, which is weird since I've been working on this same one for three days now. Anyway, also, the shift-enter allowed me to open up a file, but still couldn't get to design view.

Well, the most obvious is all that I have left.
Right click on the file, look at the properties.
Is it read-only?
Other than that, maybe someone else has an idea or two.

No, it's not marked read-only... anybody else got anything?!? [mad] <~~~frustrated

From the microsoft webpage... God help me if this works:

Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a
Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a) includes updated Visual Database Tools for Access projects. Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a addresses most of the issues described in the "Symptoms" section.

IMPORTANT NOTE : Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a also sets the table, view, and database diagram designers to read-only. These designers are read-only to prevent the possibility of losing data and meta-data in tables and views. You can, however, create stored procedures. In Access 2000 SR-1/SR-1a, if you try to create a table, view, or database diagram, you see the following alert:
You do not have exclusive access to the database at this time. Your design changes will not be saved.
NOTE: If you want to install Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a, you should do so before installing the Client Tools. If you install Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a after installing the Client Tools, you should reinstall the Client Tools.

Oh well, marching onwards...
