ok i have the old old motherboard right IBM 300PL 6862-24U P-II 350 and well i wanted to install a Gf4 mx 440 it has an onboard Video card 4 mb. What i need to know is that i only have an agp connector wat is that?? will i b able to install my video card???

These documents might help you out:

Here's a picture of an AGP slot:

Older motherboards tended to lack an AGP slot. They do make GeForce4 MX440 cards in PCI versions. If your board doesn't have an AGP slot, consider making the trade. ~cdogg

can u recommend some budget board that have 4x agp slots and is AMD compatable with SDRAM or DDR????

Which AMD? socket A Athlon/Duron?
Jetway V266B
ECS K7S5A
Both boards take both memory types.
Jetway has the faster Via KT266a chipset. Martin Please let members know if there advice has helped any.

I second the vote for a Jetway motherboard. They get slightly better reviews than the ECS boards, and in my opinion, are more reliable. However, both are good options for the low-end market.

Just remember that upgrading your motherboard sometimes requires upgrading your RAM. Some ECS boards allow both SDRAM and DDR SDRAM, so you could use your old memory if that's what you have. ~cdogg

yeah the reason i asked for sdram board is cause i have a 512 SDRAM pc-133. Buts its ok though if i have to change then i will.

Thanks a lot though :)

I would vote for the ECS K7S5A, we use them for budget upgrades for customers who don't want to make that jump to PC2100 just yet, but who would like to run a more current processor. I do all the RMA's for the company that I work for, in addtion to being a tech, and I have found a very low failure rate with the K7S5A, easy to configure, can be had on the net in low to mid $50 range. Has 5 PCI, 1 AGP, and 1 AMR, and supports up to Athlon 2200+ CPU's. Sis chipset is a minor drawback, as I am partial to the VIA chipset, but all in all a great value board.

This may not relate too much to your question. However, if you’re a gamer, I recommend you upgrading your Motherboard and Processor to at least a PIII 800 with a 4x AGP slot.

Anything slower will only make the MX440 slower, therefore your missing out the full potential of the card.

I have done many tests. 800Mhz is the minimun processor power required for best resutls. Be sure its a Pentium III Processor and not a Pentuim Celeron

Hope this helps!

Abster,
I dont know if anyone aswered one of your original questions
as to what an AGP slot is. "Accelerated Graphics Port" Possibly you found the answer on one of the links suggested. Thats one of the bad things on some of these forums, you get all kinds of suggestions without answers to basic questions.

Bobg1,

Yeah, if you check the links in the first post, you'll see a definition as well as pictures and comparisons of AGP to PCI.

Since most people that post here all the time don't like to write novels very often, better to refer to a website that covers the same thing in more detail. I think Abster is more concerned with understanding what AGP is, not just what the acronym stands for...

Ok heres the deal i am not much of a gamer i only play Counter strike , q2,q3 and UT. I am not really planning to play over 1024*768 res but since i have a TV out on my card i want to play on my Home Theatre. I am going to get and AMD XP 1700+ no matter what happens. I right now have a intel but its P2 350 MHZ (pretty crappy) n as u no now that the board doesnt even have an AGP slot (dam u IBM). Does any one live in mississauga and can give me some store sites???? I am just going to get a whole new comp but the prob is i am on a budget $300.

ABSTER,
Are you looking to buy a "pre-built" pc from a mom & pop store in the neighborhood, or do you want to build your own?

You can strip a lot out of your old pc (CDROM, Hard drive, etc) and use it in a new one that you design yourself. Might be an easy way to save some $$. ~cdogg

I just want to make an entire pc for my self only. I want to completely build it myself.

Have you been to before? That site lists the best available prices from various vendors.

I recommend finding one vendor that gives you the best deal on the motherboard. Then purchase the CPU and RAM from them as well. That way, you save on shipping. You'll probably save more buying online rather than buying retail close to home...

ooo nevermind its US. :) i'll still take a look but i am not sure if i am going to buy only if i find a good deal though.

Thanks a lot

hmm this is a really good site. The price seem so low if only i had a US - Canadian $$$ convertor. :)
