Hello,

I'm having a re-occuring problem with a Windows 2000 Server machine. After a weekend of not being touched, when touched for the first time on monday morning will not let you open any programs citing 'Out of memory'. Last week it also gave the error 'Unknown hard error'. Logging the user out and back in solved the problem for about 5 minutes, then it began again. The problem was resolved for the rest of the week by rebooting.
Today, Monday, the problem has begun again. I return to work and attempt to run a program and this time it goes to blue screen and tells me 'Stop 0x0000007A (0xc038764c, some stuff i didn't have time to write down) Kernel_Data_Inpage_Error'. Does the dump and restarts the computer, but not successfully, I get the blue screen saying 'Stop 0x0000007B (0x82071E10, 0x0000032, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) Inaccessible_Boot_Device'. I power the machine off and then on again and it starts fine.
These kind of errors happen every monday morning. Can anyone help me out?
The 2000 version info is Version 5.0 Build 2195 Service Pack 2.

I haven't personally experienced anything like this. However, I would check to see if there are any scheduled tasks that operate over the weekend that may be causing this error on Monday morning and check the logs (I don't know which one exactly) to see what went on.

Hope this helps.

Aloha,

James

I've checked in Scheduled Tasks in the control panel and nothings there. I ran a count of all processes threads over that weekend and noticed that the total thread count when up and down dramatically in the same fashion as services associated with Crystal Enterprise. I've uninstalled Crystal Enterprise and left the computer alone for 2 days. The error didn't occur, but somehow the event log became corrupted. I ran a virus scan, but it didn't find anything.
I think the real test is this weekend though. Hopefully Monday will arrive uneventfully.

Hello earme

It's been awhile, but I too experienced a problem with W/2K server running out of memory. I'm sure I didn't get the same "stop" messages you are getting though. Let me ask you are you using Norton Antivirus on this server? I found that Norton had an issue that was casusing memory leaks in W/2K servers... I tried a lot of different fixes, but none worked until I removed Norton from the server. Try this if you haven't already solved the problem... It's nice to be able to leave the Server up and running for more than 4 days without rebooting....

hope things work out ....

dfren,

Norton wasn't originally on the PC. We installed it to make sure it didn't have a virus. So the problem was pre-Norton. We ended up replacing the hard drive and then the problems stopped. I'm not completely sure why the problem kept occurring, but I have 2 theories.
(1) The hard drive had problems/was-going-bad.
(2) Since it was a Dell PC they had a bootable version of NT that automatically installed all the needed drivers and what-not. It also installed some special Dell utilities and stuff. Perhaps one of those wasn't playing well with our 2K install.

When we put in the new hard drive we didn't bother with the special Dell stuff.
Anyway, now the servers been running for a week without problems. We took it to the customers site yesterday and hopefully they won't have problems with it.

Thanks for your suggestion!
Evie
