I recently performed an upgrade from win98 to xp pro. After the installation, NAV 2004 did not work, and I got a message that it should be uninstalled and reinstalled.

During uninstallation, I got an error message that \documents and setting\[username]\desktop could not be accessed, however, OK'ing past it, the uninstallation continued. (As I expected, it left the Norton icon on the desktop, I assume because it could not remove it. But I didn't worry about that petty issue.)

Upon reinstallation, I got the same error eventually, but installation would not complete. At first I thought it was a permissions error. Even though I was logged as someone w/ admin privs, I logged off and logged back on as the local administrator but got the same error. Moreover, whenever I go to the windows explorer and browse for the desktop folder, I get a message that it's not there, but of course it's displaying the contents right in front of me.

Anyone know what's up with my desktop folders?
Thanks in advance.

Go to the Symantec website and download and use their manual removal tool.

All antivirus and firewall products are fussy. Clean them using manual efforts, even after seemingly good results with Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs.

If you do not find a NAV2004 specific tool, use the manual removal instructions for Norton 2003. The registry entries other than authorization are the same.

I had a similar problem with 2003. Found an article on Symantec's knowledge base that advised changing the user rights on the registry. Apparently, upgrading from 98SE to XP Home did not give me the user permissions to uninstall or install the program. This also appeared to be a limitation with Symantec Firewall. So, I logged on in safe mode as the administrator, changed the user permissions for daily user and tried again. (I know... I could have installed as administrator... but I needed to know if this would work). Subsequent installation worked without a hitch.
I can not recall the exact article. but you may wish to search the Symantec knowledge base for "user permissions" or registry changes.
Hope this helps

Whenever i uninstall a prog i always go into the registry, use the "find" feature and remove all instances of the program i just uninstalled. About 90% of the time I will find from 1 to 20 different instances and i delete them.
I have never had a prob doing this and lots of installs without install probs so i can say for sure that its a good idea to do that. Its risky but if you are careful and only erase, in this case, norton or symantec files, and you dont have any other norton products installed, then you cant go wrong. If you have other norton products then i would only delete those that specify they are from NAV 2004.
