I think the pc got the virus from internet explorer. Our subscription expired while on holiday and hubby may have used it before I renewed it, so I had to completely re-install the OS on my hubby's 390 emachine.
Now it does not find the Toshiba External hard drive 300 or 500 GB I think).
It has all his video edited films on it so we do need to get this working.

It does see the Sony DVD Writer which is external
Any advice please.

Wonder if it was switched off before being dismounted?
If so is there anything I can do to re-instate it.

Thanks

Also, make sure the LaCie drive is formatted with NTFS and not FAT32. FAT32 has a maximum file size of 4GB.
Another idea is to leave the drive installed in your PC and clone it to the external using Ghost or Acronis. You should have a complete drive to work with then.

I also agree freezing a drive is the LAST step to be taken to salvage a HDD.

USB devices are failure-prone due to the multiple failure points; whenever possible I go with internal drives for storage and external drives for backup only. This way, in the event of an emergency, I just grab the backup drive and go.

Yes I am in process of formatting it to NTFS. Hope I copied all the system files across first.
I had a distant memory that came to me in the early hours about Fat32 not being able to handle large files.
Though having said that I noticed one file if 11GB had copied across so don't know what is going on.

]When you say leave the drive installed in the PC which drive do you mean.
I have a version of ghost which came with Norton about 2 years ago, will that be suitable.

Hubby will be using this as the main storage whilst editing his videos we haven't got a large enough HDD in the pc to handle them so don't really have a choice.

He then puts them on DVD once edited.
I think I will get him to back up all his DVD's as well as a fail safe.

It was a relief to find the Toshiba worked when plugged directly into the PC. But oviously not the best solution as it takes out the CDROM/DVD slot. I am not sure which but it is at the top, not that that means a lot to you8 unless you know the configuration of this particular machine.

BUT I have a question:[/color blue]
Why does the LaCie drive show up as D when I use the Old D drive slot for the Toshiba which shows up as F.
Now have only one DVD drive on PC but that of course will be resolved once I have finished backing up to Lacie.
Of course we will still have the files on the Toshiba but will need to access them only if everything else fails.
:)

I am hoping to change LaCie to G once this is all sorted.
I am pretty sure I know how to do that. :)

Thank goodness the freezer treatment was not detrimental.
at the time it seemed like the last resort but have since found out I had other options.

Thanks for all the help so far, betwen you all and a techy guy I know in USA , a Googler to boot) we are sorting this problem.

YAY the drive just finished formatting and is handling the largest file in his library without any problems so far.

Thank you so much everyone
