Thanks for viewing,
I have a Dell Optiplex 755 system, running XP Pro. It is a core duo 2.33Ghz with 2 gigs mem.

I have recently done a reinstall on the system. It went well ran great until the MS Updates started coming up. I installed them with auto-update. After they installed, on restart, the computer froze when the desktop came up. I did some research and saw some possibilities but nothing worked and I have no idea how to figure out which update/s caused this nightmare. I did another reinstall of OS just for the heck of it) and updated, without IE8 (I use Firefox) and Windows Authenticating software update but it still freezes after the restart. Kind of lost as to how to figure what causes this freeze.
Any help appreciated

Do you get the same problem if booting in Safe mode? If it boots, then you could knock out a few of the Updates in Control Panel, Add and Remove Programmes, until it works...

DTracy it is SP2

GOA0Z I can get in through Safe Mode, so many updates I just didn't want to have to go through one by one :(

Thanks for the help

BigBadBen,
thanks for the help. I did go to the Dell website and dl'd the latest drivers previous to re-install. Installed them after OS install. It worked fine until updates. I think you are right and it is a driver issue though. I am getting a new hardware notice now and then computer freezes. PCI Controller driver isn't being recognized. I'm going to do a repair windows and see what happens.
Thanks again

It could be related to this
Explanation here
BTW the cause of this recent crop of Black Screen appears to be a change in the Windows Operating Systems lock down of registry keys. This change has the effect of invalidating several key registry entries if they are updated without consideration of the new ACL rules being applied. For reference the rule change does not appear to have been publicised adequately, if at all, with the recent Windows updates.

Thanks but no black screen here just a freezing cold frozen desktop.
Will do a windows repair tonight and let you know the results. I am definitely leaning towards a driver issue though.

suggestion: Ignore the DELL drivers, find the drivers from the manufacturer of each component, only use the DELLs if you do not find one, e.g. if it has Intel Chipset, then go directly to Intel, etc...

most drivers are usually woefully old, when it comes to OEM manufacturers...

Thanks all,
Well I did a system repair and it seems to be a little more stable. I am searching around for drivers and will update as I go along. Am being real cautious about the windows updates though. Next couple weeks I'm getting a laptop with 7 on it, hope that works well.
Thanks again for all suggestions looks like problem is fixed.
