After Merging, nothing is shown as available to be restored...

After inserting a month-end backup tape from late last year, I will attempt to restore a file (by session). When I try to expand the drive list, ARCserve will display this session "has been pruned. Do you want to merge the session now?" After I say yes and the session merges, I click on the '+' sign next to the drive again to expand it, and the hourglass shows up. It sits there for awhile and then the '+' sign disappears, but the drive is not expanded. Does this mean that nothing can be restored from this drive? Or, nothing can be restored without restoring everything in the drive? We have it set to prune databases older than 2 weeks, and these restores are all from late 2002 (so that wouldn't matter). We are using ARCserve 2000 (version7.0). Thanks in advance....

The Key to merging is... WAIT... Even though the Merging says it has completed, it really has not. Records continue to be added to the database for quite some time. That is why it is best to keep the Database as large as possible and managable (i.e. pruning greater than 30 days if possible). I am using SQL with my ARCserve Backup servers and can manage 2 months of history and 25GB databases. Dropping and re-creating the indexes is necessary every week though to prevent unexpected reboots.

Run a scan on the tape by choosing Log all activity in the scan options.. This could tell you what do yuo have in the tape ... If you are able to find the records in the scan log and still unable to merge then there is a problem with the arcserve database ... So you can initalize the database and run tmerge again to restore the data .. DatabaseBaba...

Merges will run MUCH faster with an empty database. You might want to back up the database before initializing it though. Always better to have the file data in the database for when you might need that quick restore, rather then messing with merge. It is sometimes quicker to restore a large ARCserve database then to wait for a merge to get completely incorporated into the database. I even keep a history of ARCserve DB backups so that if a large 300 GB backup is pruned from a database, I have the option to restore an older database as opposed to running through a painful merge.

Hi,

We have the same problem as indicated above, we want to restore a file via Arcserve and when we click the + sign the folders do not expand. We have initialised the database and merged lots of times, but the data does not expand. However the device info indicates over 45GB on the tape?

This is the problem I'm looking to get an answer on as well. I have run the merge and let it finish successfully, in fact, I've done it twice merging all sessions both times and then even the single session I want to restore from, yet in each case I have been unable to expand the tree down to list the files from each session.

I too have ran into this issue and it appears to be a refresh issue. I have attempted to merge pruned data before and once the merge job finishes I try to expand the tree and nothing is expanded. I have found that once you merge the data open a new restore window(do not go tback to the one where you were told a merge was needed, open a new one) when I attempted to expand the drive again after opening a new restore window, it expanded without error. Not a fix but a work around...

I have had this same issue with ArcServe 7 for Netware. I've found that by double-clicking on the folder as opposed to clicking on the + sign can yield positive results. May as well give it a try!
