After installing WIN2000 and checking the hardware, both COM-ports aren't working. My mainboard is ASUS P2B. Anyone have a solution ?

First and foremost, are the COM ports recognized within Device Manager? Are they listing any conflicts or problems?

If they are listed in Device Manager, try deleting them and having Win2k attempt to automatically find them (search for new hardware).

If they are still not recognized or not in Device Manager, are there any devices in your computer using IRQ3/4 or IO 2f8/3f8? Are the COM ports setup within BIOS to use the standard IRQ/IO combinations? If not, are there other devices set up that are using the same IRQ or IO addresses?

What are you hooking up to the COM ports to check to see if they are working? If its a UPS, was it connected during the install of Win2k - I have heard there are some problems with UPS's and Win2k's setup program.

Have you checked the mother board manufacturer's web site for any updated BIOS or conflicts with Win2k?

Hope this helps a bit,
Paul Kincaid

Thanks for the hints. I finally found the solution by upgrading the BIOS to the latest version. Everything is working fine now : )
