After Cisco VPN Client install I cannot browse

On a WXP Pro SP1 laptop, as soon as reboot after installing the Cisco VPN Client (v4.0.4) I cannot browse or collect mail with either my dial-up or ISDN connection. I can connect to my ISP but I cannot do anything after that. I cannot ping anything or get anywhere. It is as if TCP/IP traffic will not pass through the connection. As soo as I delete the VPN software and reboot I can browse once more.

I cannot work this out and it is sending me nuts. I could understand it if I had started the VPN software but it isn't even running, only installed.!!

Any ideas?

There is/are some services running even if Cisco client is not started.

I've stopped the Cisco service too and still the same. Has anyone come across a solution to this problem?

When you are trying to get to the internet is there a lock at the bottom of your screen?

I'm not sure and I haven't got the laptop with me for the weekend

I have the same issue. Running Win2k Pro with Cisco VPN client 4.0.4 using an ADSL internet connection.

After installing the VPN client browsing stops working. I can ping domain names on the internet but cannot browse them in IE.

I'm running all the latest MS hotfixes and updates and run an up to date antivirus.

If anyone has any suggestions it would be much appreciated.

Hmm

Strange, don't know what's worse. Me not being even able to ping an address or you being able to, but then can't browse!!

Maybe your IE settings have been altered somehow? Have you any other browser installed that works still?

I'll try another browser tomorrow.

The strange thing is that I can still establish a vpn connection to work and log into citrix.

Stranger still... I can browse the internet when using a dialup connection.

It all seems to point to the network settings but after uninstalling and reinstalling the network adapter the problem still exists.

It may be possible that the VPN install has reconfigured your LAN settings that your ADSL connection uses. In particular it may have altered the gateway address to match the address of the vpn solution so when you have no tunnel established and try to browse their is nowhere for the request to route to.

Double-check your settings before and after the VPN install by running the command ipconfig /all from a command prompt

I have seen this problem with the Symantec VPN Client but not the Cisco. With the Symantec Client, file and print sharing was disabled during the install "to limit exposure to the network". Also if split-tunneling is disabled and your Cisco Client is connected, all traffic will be forced into the tunnel, even if it destined for your local network.
