Backups were working fine, however, after changing the administrator password (the account that Backup Exec services are using), two of our servers give an "unable to attach. Access is denied" message in the log file. Any help would be appreciated.
I had the same "unable to attach. Access is denied" error message.
I called Support and they sent me the following procedure which works for me:
1. Close BE
2. Close BE services
3. Browse to :\Program Files\Veritas\Backup Exec\NT\Data
4. Rename Bewinui.uni to Bewinui.old
5. Start BE services
6. Start BE
7. Run a test backup using the same servers\drives
I have had the same problem as well. What i had to do to fix this was:
1: Stop all BackupExec services.
2: choose properties and change the logon info ( this account and insert your BE account with the propper PW)
3: repeat on all BE services
4: start all BE services
5: open VeritasBE
5: Chose the folder "Backup Selections" and select a drive to attach to
6: in the menu choose "Network" -> "Set default attach to" and enter the proper login ( same as in the services)
7: repeat this step for ALL networkdrives you need to backup.
This should fix your problem with "unable to attach. Access is denied" -- at least this did it for me Good luck!
Tried to resign a new admin user and password to Backup service & recreate a scheduled backup and I am still getting:

Stop all backup exec services >> rename the BEWINUI.UNI (veritas\backup exec\nt\data >> start all BE services >> launch the BE console (it will not create a new BEWINUI.UNI until you do so) > try it again
I have had this issue for a while and was starting to worry where I might fi d teh answer, I had changed teh backup exec password due toa seniior member of staff leaving that knew teh old password.
I reset all the services etc and although the machine running BE could browes to all teh folders it needed to backup it failed on several drives with the "unable to attach" error.
Sifting through this thread I find that if I go to Backup Selections and try to browes to the problem drives it comes up and asks me for teh password.
I have just reset all my passwords on teh errornious drives and think that this might have sorted it out.
I have a similar problem.
It started after applying the Blaster Patch ( maybe coincidence )
I backup SQL 7.0 server locally using BE 8.6 on W2000
no password or account changes have been done.
when I backup the files on the server it is OK
when I backup the SQL databases during the night I get an error Unable to attach, Access is denied
when I backup the same database with the same shedulled job, using RUN NOW it work perfectly
I applied the sollutions provide in this forum
renamed BEWINUI.UNI and let it recreate, but it the error stayed the same.
Any idees please
It happened after I've changed the Domain Administrator Password and I've solved the issue by creating an administrative share for the Drive to be backed-up granting permissions only to the account used to backup the files.
So now I'm performing the backup using as selection list the new shares.
It worked for me don't know if works for you as well!
