Gentlemen,

I have read other posts on the subject but I would like to ask for advice on a 5.0mp4 to 6.0 upgrade. I have gone over the installation guide and have a written procedure to follow during the upgrade of my one master and 5 media servers. Did you run into any unforeseen problems? Did the EMM database populate OK with the nbpushdata -add? I don't have spare time to troubleshoot it so I want to do it right the first time. Thank you for your help

i did the upgrade on our test boxes and the installation of NOM to the master killed device manager (pbx and other services ) from working. i read (don't remember where) that another user had the same experience and that NOM should definately be installed somewhere else other than the master. it replaces a few files and can corrupt the install.

I upgraded from 5.1 MP3 to 6.0. The nbpushdata -add worked great at allowing me to populate my other media servers at different times. Which allowed me to not have to upgrade all my media servers immediately when I upgraded my Master Server. The problem that I ran into was when installing NOM. According to the documentation, you supposedly can install on any Server that has the netbackup client including the Master Server. The only exception is if the Master Server is in a cluster, then it is recommended not to install NOM on that box. My Master Server isnt in a cluster but once I installed the authenication and authorization services from the ICS CD the EMM database became corrupt. I had to remove and reinstall NBU 6 on my Master Server. I did a bprecover and was able to get to the point where I was before the Authenication and Authorization installation. Tech Support told me not to install NOM on the Master Server even though the documentation says you can. It only requires the client so I am going install it on a box used just for NOM purposes. The other thing to remember is when setting up the catalog backup for 6.0, you need to make sure that the NetbackupDB directory is included. That is where your EMM database is located. That is the main difference from the 5.1 cat backup. Also you can choose to do a hot backup instead of offline backup of the catalog as well. My backup to disk have worked great since the upgrade too.

Just because the VERITAS documentation states a certain thing does not make it a fact and that is truth.

I forgot to mention that VERITAS is a Latin word.
VERITAS = truth
....and that's funny. I don't care who you are! You gotta laugh at that.

anybody know if you can do a fresh install of 6 and recover 5.0 catlogs? i'm trying this right now but i'm thinking that i should've done the bprecover before i did the push data. i'm going to try this once the one i'm doing completes but i'm trying to make plans on how to best upgrade to 6 in the least amount of time.

I was told my a veritas rep that 6.0 is only half finished...He didnt recomend upgrading untill version 6.1....Leave it to Veritas to put a half assed product...I didnt think thier name was Microsoft...

xxx01,

Yes. On our test boxes, I did a fresh install of 6.0, SFW_HA 4.2 and successfully recovered our 5.0 MP4 catalog data. For those using VCS, the NBU 6.0 agent for VCS actually works.
