Advice for Newbie to IP Office upgrades

Just looking for advice/experiences with IP Office upgrades. Been reading some of the posts already, some of which sound scarry, so thought I'd put my specs up for comment.

IP406 currently on 2.0(16)
Dig DCPx16 and Analog POTS8+ both at 4.0(16)

1) Should I even attempt this remotely (I'm thinking not)
2) Sounds like Avaya's initial x.0 releases are not good; what version have others had good luck with.
3) Should I upgrade directly to final version, or would it be better to do an intermediate upgrade first.
4) How do I know I have a good backup? Is it really just a bunch of .bin files and 2 .cfg files?

hi,

you don't have to panic, you'll learn along the way.
do an upgrade remotely is going perfect if you are in release 2.1. But i'm also a person who really want to see what is going on. So i always go on site. Taking a x.O can be a tricky one, there are often a lot of bugs in it. So if your customer doesn't want any specific feature let it be on that version, read a lot of the newer releases and wait for the maintenance release. This will be a little bit more stable and reliable.

A backup is nothing more then a copy of the cfg files. The bin files you can find them on the cd's. For VM pro there is a documented paper for the backup.

I have been putting these in since release 1.0 and what I have noticed is when on sight things are easy to troubleshoot if something goes wrong witht th upgrade. The Upgrades are fairly simple. If you go to the Avaya sight and then downloads search IP Office Upgrades, you will find alot of documentation. Very detailed and easy to understand. If you follow these directions it should be a walk in the park.
On doing it remotely......Like I said I been doing IP Offices for a while and everyone was on sight. Play it Safe.

Version 2.0(16) you have to be on site or have someone on site doing it for you.
I have a lot of sites i cant go to. I usually ship a CD. Have someone installing the the manager and control it remotely. As stevepaz said "play it safe".

Upgrades are simple & painless if you obey ALL the rules otherwise you are in for some excitement (the faq above will then save your bacon)

V2.0 & earlier cannot be upgraded remotely so dont even bother unless you want a dead box & a site visit to recover.

V2.1+ you can upgrade the firmnware remotly buit remember that any IPO applicatioons on site will also need upgrading (especialy manager if you do not want the customer to corrupt his system)
