Is it possible to do that with gradients in illustrator?

For me it dossent seems like there are any advanced gradient contole. is there anyway i can controle the flow or make the gradient follow a specific line or shape?

If it aint doable in illustrator i could use some tips on what program i can use

thanks Mikkel

...of course, the other way is to make the gradient longer so the darkness spreads around the curve more...

...but again, experimentation is required...

...if you want to color it, change the brush colorization to tints or tints and shades...

...then all you have to do is change the stroke color...

Actually, this effect can be created in Photoshop using the gradient "angle" setting. I have been research another gradient idea in shapes and had been collaborating with another Graphic Designer about my idea and we randomly stumbled upon this effect with gradients.

...this is true it can be created in photoshop, it is a little more awkward to achieve than in illustrator, particularly the long custom shape with curved end i think...

...illustrator is far easier to achieve it, and also much easier to adjust, so if i had the choice i would use illustrator to do it...
