ADSL disconnects every 15 mins

After years of trouble free connection I came home after a weekend away to find I had no ADSL connection. The status in Network Connections said it was connected and the modem power and signal lights were green, but I had to disconnect then connect to get back on line.

Same thing happened 15 minutes later, with same work around.

My ISP got me to change modem and drivers with no success. They checked the line quality and all was fine.

They seem to have run out of ideas now, so I’m looking to move to another ISP, but don’t want to do so without at least having an idea of what the cause of the problem could be.

Anybody have any suggestions as to the possible cause? Or even better a possible solution?

Regards
Kim

When it dies, can you ping your modem? where does you traceroute die? Do you have more than one computer connected to it and/or can you connect a different device to it to make sure the problem isn't spyware shutting it down?

Do you live near area 51 and have you seen strange lights in the Northern sky when you're sober?

mine did that, found a bad filter on a wireless phone of all things

I say it's the line coming into the house---the signal will test good, which is all the ISP lamers usually do. If they actually send a tech out, then they may use a freq meter and determine that the dsl signal is not able to go through because the required frequency band is not available on the wire. This is normally due to a weak connection to the service box outside, or the power block in your basement (original wiring was not CAT5e, just stranded wire). It could also rust on the outside as it goes into the service box right outside---this is somewhat common, and also will explain why you get a dial tone but rare internet connectivity, and sporadic internet problems.
I would also replace all filters, like BobFroeh suggests...

Thanks to all those that tried to help, but I never found out what the cause was. I ditched EFH Broadband as they could not help with the problem and signed up with Sky. Problem instantly solved.

I'm still curious as to what it could have been. I changed the modem and drivers and the problem remained. Sky works perfectly with no change to my filters or local loop etc. So it must have been something wrong at the EFH Broadband end. It happened after I returned from a period away from the PC, so it wasn't anything that changed at my end.

I should have changed ISP sooner, I am annoyed I gave the incompetents so many months of excessive charge for such pathetic service.

That's life huh?
