I got a client that is using an ADR Backup solution.

The problem lies where they are using a 15/30 ADR Tape and trying to backup 15GB of compressed data. We should be able to fit up to 30GB of compressed data, but it's filling up before 15GB is backed up. The ADR Backup unit itself supports up to 50GB.

Is there something I should be knowing here? They are using Backup Exec 8.6 Small Business Ed. 3 Techs have taken a look at it remotely already and can not figure out why it will not backup the full 15GB compressed. Is there a manual compression option on the tape or unit itself?

The ADR50 uses hardware compression, so under most circumstances it is able to achieve 2:1 compression if you have hardware compression enabled, however it is possible that without that hardware compression enabled, or if the data in the 15GB is already compressed, it will not be able to be compressed again. Also the indexing files that Backup Exec puts on the tape takes up some of that 15GB.

The files aren't already compressed. I should be able to fit 30GB of compressed data though, right? If it can't fit 15GB worth, then there is something going on. The Backup Exec indexing wouldn't take up the other 15GB.

Do you have the hardware compression enabled in backup exec?

Just to test it out, you may want to try just using the NTBackup and see whether you get any different results with hardware compression enabled...just to see whether it is perhaps a setting within backup exec. You may also want to try disabling hardware compression in backup exec and using backup exec's software compression, see if you get any better results that way.
