AdPrep fails when trying to run on Windows 2000 server 3

I'm trying to finally upgrade my domain to Windows 2K3 and get the following error when trying to run adprep /forestprep from the schema master:

Adprep was unable to check the forest update status.
[Status/Consequence]
Adprep queries the directory to see if the forest has already been prepared. If
the information is unavailable or unknown, Adprep proceeds without attempting th
is operation.
[User Action]
Restart Adprep and check the Adprep.log file. Verify in the log file that this forest has already been successfully prepared.

Adprep encountered a Win32 error.
Error code: 0x57 Error message: The parameter is incorrect..


I have tried transferring the schema master role to another server and receive the same message. I should also add that this is the AdPrep from an R2 disc. Not sure if that makes any difference.

Are you running it logged in as an Enterprise Admin?

Yes. I've tried my two different accounts that are Enterprise Admins with no luck

Are those user accounts members of the schema admins??

Check that the schema fsmo role is actually on 1 of your dc's, you may not have noticed until now if it had been on a server that's died/been removed in the past.

This is what I see for roles. Correct me if I'm wrong, but is it saying that the Schema Master is CN=DATAWORKSTS01? If thats the case, the server isn't here anymore. I'll have to thank the guy who worked here before me because I've never heard of that server.

I'd still run the netdom query and be absolutely sure you're on the schema master.
