I have a new laptop and installed Adobe Reader 8.1. Now I notice that whenever I create or download a PDF, Reader immediately opens it.

While this is not a major problem, it is annoying. It didn't do this on my other PCs. It has to be a setting somewhere but I can't find it. I've looked in Reader's settings and file options but nothing looks like that would be it. I also looked on the internet via a variety of search engines but no luck.

Anybody run into this and got an answer?

Is there any plugin or add-on in the browser that is performing this task? What is the "Adobe PDF Reader link helper" that I see in Add-ons?

I thought about an add-on but I don't use the web browser to create PDF and there isn't a setting on the PDF creator either. Very odd!!!!

The link helper, I assume, is to allow the browser to open PDFs in a browser window. I may have to investigate it further though.

Have you tried disabling the Reader_SL.exe from Adobe in MsConfig Startup?

Links on Google talk about an edit of file type parameters.

Open *.pdf file automatically after compilation

Try your luck in the Adobe Acrobat Forum.

Thanks, Linney. Yes, I did turn the startup off via CCleaner. Most of the google searches I ran across earlier. I'll give the few I didn't see a try.

What program are you using to create PDF's? In my limited experience, there is usually a setting that allows/disallows the PDF to open automatically after creation. May it's just buried in the user interface?

Here's where to enable/disable the displaying of newly created - it's in the Distiller/AdobePDF printer properties.

You can choose between a downloaded PDF opening in within your browser or in Adobe Reader in AR's Preferences.

I've been using PDFCreator for creating the PDFs. I looked and looked and can't find a unusual settings for it. It is a very basic creator (re: freebie).

I do want to open my PDFs in the web browser. The problem is if I download one, I usually don't want it to open again in Reader afterwards.

What irks me, is this has never happened on my other PCs I've set up and used. I must have done something different on this one.

A workaround could be to use Foxit iso Adobe Reader = smaller, faster and as good :)

I tried Foxit. I got frustrated with some of the options that only work with the paid version. Also, Reader 8 installs an hook into Windows search that allows me to look up words in PDF documents. That way I can search for "April 2007" in "*.pdf" in a directory using Windows.
