I am playing with the AD Migration Tool. It "sees" the source Domain, but cannot 'contact' it when I try to run the Computer migration wizard. Do I need a DNS entry on the Target Server/Domain to get it to reach the source Domain? What would that record look like? Stub Zone?

I have not used the ADMT, but my migration experience tells me that you will need DNS resolution as well as netbios resolution to the old and new domain.

So, make sure you can ping "otherdomain.net" as well as "otherdomain".

If not, make the DNS/WINS/HOSTS file changes.

OK, yeah, I know that I need name resolution, but I am not trying to resolve a host, but rather the Domain. What entry should be created to point to a Domain and associated AD Server? What format. An SOA record? NS Record?

OK so I have a Host and LM Host record created and now the ADMT contacts the Source Domain, but I get an Access Denied message, so I need an account that has permission to access the Source domain. How do I create an account in one domain that has permission in another domain?

A NS record, but in my experience the netbios resolution was just as important. So the WINS/Hosts file entry could be your problem.

Sorry, I said the wrong thing. I meant an "A" record. You do not need an NS record.

Yeah, the Host File and LMHosts seems to get me connected, but now I am hitting a wall with creating the two way trusts that need to be functioning to make ADMT work. I cannot get the Trust to validate.

Are you putting in the same password on both sides? Is your PDC Emulator Role up, running, and reachable on both domains?

Is the source domain NT or 2000/3? What about the target domain? I've used the ADMT with NT to 2003, a long time ago, but I remember that you need to install something on the NT PDC, and there's a service that needs to be running on the PDC, in order for the ADMT to work. If you google PES you'll get more info. on this.

Also, on your target domain, you will probably want to disable SID filtering before migrating. If you are going to have your 2 domains running in parallel for any length of time. More info on that here...

I have sorted out the worst of it... The DNS entry was teh key to get teh ADMT to run... Going from 2003 to 2003. Move a computer account over, but it remained in the old domain as well!! The computer itself still associates with the old domain! So all that was moved is an object that appears in teh COmputers OU, but now real migration has taken place... Still plugging away...
