Hi,

I want to make ALL of my XP users non-administrators because I don't want them to be able to install programs or amend system files/settings.

Is there anything else they WON'T be able to - eg. can they change time? can they change desktop wallpaper/screensaver?

I keenly await your reply.

Regards,
Jay/UK

Howdy:

Log on as the Admin.. Then go to Control Panel>Users.. Change everyone you want to "limited"

That's all there is to it..

Suggestion.

Set up a 'typical' machine, set up a 'normal' (limited?) user (are we talking domain or workgroup here, by the way). Then run through all the apps - to make sure they will actually run with that level of access (some need Power User or even Administrator access just to run). Adjust user level & use local group policy editor - run gpedit.msc (if not domain) until everything works. Then check what else they can do that you don't want them to - use gpedit.msc again if appropriate to impose restrictions. Then check all apps still work.

Any other method (ie, reading lots of advice) will run up against the practical vagaries of your particular environment when you try to implement it.

Hi,

Perhaps I should have mentioned that PCs are part of domain.

Does this help you to give more specific advice?

I know administrators can do everything and limited/restricted cannot install programs - never heard of "power users" and any others.

one more suggestion. in gpedit.msc. user configuration, administrative templates, control panel, add & remove program policy. in here you can hide add & remove program page, you can hide add & remove program from CD-Rom, Floppy drive. ect. I hope these would be helpful.
