sister in laws computer... she clicked off herself as administrator and turned herself on as limited user now she can only use internet. is there a way to change it back without doing a restore on the computer...its a compaq. i dont have XP and she lives 300 miles away i have done work on here system before but without me being there i cant visualize what im doing any suggestions?

You might be able to do this, but I'm not completely sure...
Try having her go to Start>Run and type 'control userpasswords2' and look for the option use CTRL+ALT+DEL to log on to the machine instead of the standard Windows XP welcome screen. It should be on the second tab of that particular window. I'm not sure if she'll be able to access it without being an admin though.
If she can, she can use the administrator logon to log onto the machine (assuming she can remember the password from when the OS was installed) and change her group membership.
SOrry that this isn't much help. If you were at the machine, you could use ERD to reset the local admin password:(
Good luck!

No matter what she did there will be an Administrator account.

When she starts the computer have her early and often hit the F8 key and then select Safe Mode.

Here logon name would be Administrator. It is likely the password is empty, so have her just hit the Enter key.

Control Panel, Users and Groups, highlight her username and change her account type.

Or you could do it the easy way:) Thanks bcastner:) Sometimes, I think to hard...

infernon,

My concern was that we do not know if the machine is running Home or Pro. There are some peculiarities to accessing the Administrator account in Home edition.

It is always available under Safe mode.

I have also found for some odd reason that people have problems correctly doing the sequence Start, Run, control userpasswords2. I do not know why, but it is for some reason a less than certain proposition.

Best.

so your saying go through safe mode is best for her...to be safe, she isnt to computer literate so earier is best

and yes it is regular XP for home users not XP -PRO

If I had a user 300+ miles away, I would have her go through Safe Mode.

thank you for all your help i emailed your help to my sister in law in chigaco, im in southern indiana... she fixed it.. THANK YOU BUNCHES!!!!
