Administrative versus User Rights

I'm having much difficulty getting a software, OREIS 7.0, to work when signed on as someone with just user rights. The software launches just fine. There are 6 options at the top of the screen to choose from, the option for "railcar ID" does not work. You click on the button and nothing happens when signed on as someone with just user rights. If you have administrative rights this works just fine. It opens a small dialog box asking you what type of query you want: System Testing or Incident to which you reply Cancel or OK.

I have tried everything I can think of to get this to work. And I have tested this using more than one PC/laptop. I have given users full control to the ENTIRE hard drive and to the ENTIRE registry. I have went into local security policy and gave users rights to everything the Administrator has and then some.

Does anyone have any idea or thought on what the culprit could be. I have worked with the software company to no avail. They weren't very helpful and finally told me today they do not have the resources to work on this issue.

My I.T. department has a policy that users are not to have administrative rights to their computers, so I'm trying my best to abide by this policy, but this situation makes abiding by that difficult, because otherwise we give the user a dysfunctional piece of software.

I would appreciate any help anyone could give. Thanks so much!

I wonder if you might benefit from this type of wrapper program which will run your OREIS 7.0 as an Administrator for all users who launch it without you adjusting machine wide permissions?

These might link you to the actual download.

Good idea, however I can't get the download...

When you are giving "users" full rights to the hard drive, I would double-check that you are doing this correctly.

You cannot simply right-click the C: drive, select properties and give full rights to the user. In addition to that, you must click the "advanced" button on that permission tab after you apply your changes. On the advanced window, you want to select "Replace permission entries on all child objects..." and click apply. This extra step applies the changes to all subfolders and files.

For the entire C: drive, this could take a long time to complete. It will also take a long time to undo! Instead, you might want to start with just the program's folder and the windows folder. My guess is that the program is making changes to the registry while it is running, so it can be tricky to nail down a specific location. Perhaps Linney's tool will give you a quicker solution.

Will the app run correctly if the user is a member of the 'power users' group?

Try using the Program Compatibility Wizard on this program. You'll find it in Start>All Programs>Accessories. Run as a different operating system (Win98 or WinME), disable the video themes.

David.
