Administrative Tasks

Hi Folks,

We don't actually have an administrator in our organisation. As such, I'm sure our network is not running to it's full potential.

What are the run of the mill sort of tasks that should be done on W2kS on a daily/weekly basis.

I already back up the network using BUE8.6

What options are there for scripting/scheduling administrative tasks under W2k?

Generally backups and updating patches (Windows Update) is all I can think of at the moment. It's hard to know with out doing a detailed survey of your network. I would recommend you call a IT company with a good reputation in your area to come out, document your network and write procedures for you. The documentaion should record things like the configurations of your servers and network equipment, what are you going to do if the server and/or other networking equipment dies and needs to be replaced, or rebuilt. Have them make recomendations about virus and security also.

Televison will make radio obsolete.
 
I'm a contract IT administrator for a small company like yours. What I do is go in every week or two and check the event viewers; make sure the backups run and restore files every so often for safety's sake; setup new users and disable old ones; help with workstations issues; plan new rollouts and either implement or oversee subcontractors; check the anti-virus software to make sure it's updating the latest files and sending them to workstations. There's lots of other little things that come up, but those are the basics.

Like Rob said, I'd be most concerned about the backups and the anti-virus software. I've known companies go months not getting a good backup and don't know it until there's a failure...then it's too late! Ouch!!

It never hurts to know someone in advance of a real problem. In the event of a catastrophe anyone coming in is at a severe disadvantage because they're trying to recover on an unfamiliar network. That can be pretty costly.
