hi,
anybody has any ideas how to get admin privileges back after virus removal and xp repair install? over 100 programs not being recognized and re-install of the apps is not allowed.

msconfig is a seperate file by itself. Windows 2000 for example does not come with it and must be added seperately.

when i went to perfect drivers to download msconfig, it said "windows 2000 - xp version" is that ok though?
i'm going to try these tonight when i get home. but it'll be late arount 10:00 est. is anybody around here to check for help though?
thanks!
:)

yeah the 2000-xp version is the same and is the one you need. The other one is for windows 98 which you dont need. This forum has members from all around the world so someones bound to be awake when you post lol.

I admire your optimism that only one virus infected your machine, usually where there is one that broke your machine there are many others that you may have been living with for a while. Whereas a repair of XP as per 315341 might help, it is also likely to copy across any other virus, trojan, or worms, from the faulty install.

Just make sure you are clean of all the malware by running several of the programs mentioned in FAQ608-4650.

thanks linney,
well, i got home a little late last night. and i tried some of the stuff you all suggested. the config.exe that i got, worked one time, then it did not the second time.
ie explorer will not go to any sites. firefox will not go into any sites. mirc is not working. and will not connect to any network.

i also get this error occasionally:
application layer gateway service has encountered a problem and needs to shut down.
i get the same error with SNMP.
i installed defender, spysweeper found nothing. defender found nothing. avg found gaelicum.a and supposedly cleaned it. but then after startup, a logon dialog opened and would not accept established password for any user including admin. it kept logging on and off. finally i shut down, and did a repair install of xp. i was late for school this am, so i left it at 19 minute time left to finish. how can i get rid of this stupid virus, please?

Download these 2 programs and run a full system scan in safe mode. Then next time you load windows normally disable and reenable system restore to clean it out.
