hi,
anybody has any ideas how to get admin privileges back after virus removal and xp repair install? over 100 programs not being recognized and re-install of the apps is not allowed.

Give this thread a try.

thanks,
electro..
i'm going to give that a try. but here's a question that i have. will this fix the problem that i'm having with programs (that have lost their regular icon and can't be run now)? there are over a hundred apps that can't be run. i get a msg saying that "the file or the folder may not exist or you don't have sufficient access to run them".
thanks!

All you need to do with those is change there shortcut link. Go to the properties of them and change the location to where thye are at now and they should work then. A few you might have to reinstall but most should work that way.

thanks!
the location of the programs where the shortcut is point to, hasn't changed (program files). do i have to re-direct the shortcut to program files again? btw, i tried to install a few of them and it came back with "access denied", i guess to program files folder. but i think after your above post (how to take ownership....) i might get around that.
thanks again.

Yeah try the above step and then post back with the results and let us know.

Jessicatechy,
You need to log into safe mode using an administrator account.

For example, say the user Bill has administrator rights in normal mode. When you restart XP in safe mode, you might notice several accounts: Bill, Administrator, etc. Although it seems that you would want to log in as Administrator, DO NOT. You would instead log in as Bill, then take ownership of the folder, subfolders, and so on.

After rebooting back into Normal mode, access should be restored...

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
