I can't seem to be able to do this. Imagine I have a table of regular rows and columns and I wish to move of the cell edges, so as to make one cell smaller and misaligned with the cells in it's column

Indesign always adjusts the entire column that aligns with the cell I wish to change, making it impossible to have a cell which is not aligned to the rest of the column.

Any way around it?

Try spliting the column in two (Table - split cell vertically) and then (Table - merge) the two cells in front of it. This will give you the cell aligned different and smaller than the rest in the column.

Does this help?

Sorry I've noticed a mistake I've made. (Try spliting the cell in two)! not the column. . .
