I have a Addtron Cable Modem Router and Nortel VPN Client V04_65.09. If I hook my pc up directly to the cable modem I can connect to the VPN with no problems. But when I try to connect with my pc connected through my router it doesn't work? Get message "Login Failure due to: Remote host not responding".
So I know me vpn client works but not through the router.
Does anyone know what ports need to be opened to use Nortel VPN client?

Thanks

You need port 500 and protocols 17 (udp) and 50 (esp). Note that those last two are protocols, not ports (common mistake). Some routers forward the protocols by default, so if you don't see anything to forward specific protocols, you might try it with just port 500. Works sometimes.

Thanks, for the reply. I opened port 500, I don't see anything for protocols 17(udp) and 50(esp) in my router.
I tried connecting and still doesn't work.
I've had my router for a while. Could I possibly need a new router that supports vpn? If so does anyone know what router will work for this?
Thanks

Do you have an option to pass IPSEC? It is a check box on the Linksys and the Netgear. If not most same cable/dsl routers do not give you the option to create a custom rule to pass 50/51 protocol. The port to be opened is UDP 500.

You may need to upgrade to a newer router/bridge such as the Linksys

Nortel has an option to explicitely allow IPSec NAT traversal as well. You'll have to configure the Nortel box to allow it, and that will solve lots of problems with NAT routers (and also Windows 2000 NAT...) --------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks for all the replys. I upgraded to a linksys router with firewall and that took care of all my problems.
