Address slots fill with recurring zeros

All my address slots fill with recurring zeros. When I highlight the address slot in order to enter a web URL or a search request or a program name,the slot just fills up with zeros that keep rolling on.
This happens in:- Google search; IE6 URL addres slot; Start> Run in WinXP Pro; Nort Antivirus . Anywhere where an entry s required.
Where to start looking?

Sorry, it was the Keyboard! Had just cloned the disk so was thinking elsewhere.
