we had some users that were wanting mail forwarded to an external (hotmail) account. There is a user that is no longer using that account and I wish to remove it fom the GAL. However, after I deleted the "Contact" icon in AD, I can still see that Hotmail Contact address in the GAL of the outlook users.

I must be missing something. Please help. There's only one Exchange 2k3 running on a Server 2k3 with 9 users all running Outlook 2k3.

Thank you,

Dan

How long has it been since you deleted the contact, and are your Outlook users running in Cached mode? If Outlook is running in Cached mode, Exchange has to update the offline address book with the changes (deletion), and then Outlook has to update its copy of the offline address book. It could take up to a day before the change is reflected in Outlook.

I just deleted it. While at the server I deleted the Contact. Then I went to a user, pulled up a New Mail window and went to pull and address from the GAL and there was the account that I had just deleted. Did I not wait long enough? Do I need to power cycle the Exchange server?

Now it's a day later and I just went to check and see if the account was gone. Low and behold, it's gone! So, why didn't it take effect right away?

Depends on your enviroment but usually replication and if you have cache mode on the Outlook client. I am sure that there is more but those two come to mind.

You need to force a rebuild of the OAB. When Outlook 2003 clients are using cache mode, what you think is the GAL is really the OAB. To verify, turn cached mode off on one client machine and you should no longer see the contact.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark
