I have a couple of NT 4.0 boxes that I need to set printers up on. They are printing through a Win 2K server so I want to add NT 4 drivers with the additional drivers button. It tells me to insert the server cd and then tells me that the drivers aren't there or the printer is unsupported. I know the HP 4050 is supported. The drivers from HP's website are the same for both Operating Systems. Why can't I set them up?
I tried pointing to the driver .inf but it keeps asking the the server CD, and errors out. What can I do? I checked both websites and didn't find anything. I am installing the driver locally for the NT boxes for now, but would like the driver on the server.

Thanks

Hi,
THis may not be the perfect fix, but use the HP 5M drivers.
They work with the 4050's. --Chris

I just did this on a Win2k server. The problem
is because there is an upgrade bug in the HP4050 driver. The NT4.0 driver is actually named "HP LaserJet 4050 Series PCL 6" whereas the Win2K driver is named "HP LaserJet 4050 Series PCL". When the server tried to add the driver it doesn't see a matching name and assumes it is not the correct drver. There is a file on the Win2K CD called "printup.inf" that lists a ton of printers with this problem. I believe the Win2K setup program uses this when doing an upgrade to determine the correct driver to upgrade to on installed printers.

Fixes for additional drivers:
1. Open the HP4050p6.inf and change the name under the [HP] section to match the Win2K name. Then try to add the driver again.
2. In the case of the 4050 there is actually a combined NT/2K driver. Update the driver on your print server and both 2K and NT drivers should be able to connect.

I haven't lost my mind - I know it's backed up on tape somewhere ....
