Sir,
I have a pdc with 2000 server (bpo.local is the domain name)..
i had created a additional domain controller of my Parent domain ....

Active directory is replicated to my Additional Domain Controller properly..

My Query is :-
I had not installed DHCP and DNS service on my Additional Domain Controller as they are already running on my Parent Domain controller.

Now suppose my PDC fails then from where should the Machine's in My network will get the Ip's ??????

Can we run DHCP and DNS on 2 machines at a time ..I mean to say on my Parent and Additional Domain Controller at the same time ....

Plz guide..
Rgds..

Yes you can run DHCP on both Servers. Make sure you manage the scope so that they both have unique addresses to handout within your subnet.

As far as DNS, you can install it on your second Server.

From Microsoft Technet,

"With directory-integrated storage, dynamic updates to DNS are conducted based upon a multimaster update model.

In this model, any authoritative DNS server, such as a domain controller running a DNS server, is designated as a primary source for the zone. Because the master copy of the zone is maintained in the Active Directory database, which is fully replicated to all domain controllers, the zone can be updated by the DNS servers operating at any domain controller for the domain.

With the multimaster update model of Active Directory, any of the primary servers for the directory-integrated zone can process requests from DNS clients to update the zone as long as a domain controller is available and reachable on the network."

That with the DHCP makes a lot of sense, but how would you set up a secondary or back up DNS server

cheers

Just install DNS on the new server and Active Directory will take care of the replication.

"3.4. Configuring a second local DNS Server

In order to provide more fault tolerance, if you have a second domain controller you can also install a DNS server onto it. If you do, you should find that no configuration is necessary so long as you have already configured the first DNS server that you installed. This is one of the benefits of creating Active Directory-integrated zones. Once you have installed the second server, check the properties of the zones that you created — you should find that your second server has been added to the list of name servers for the zone automatically."

That will basically mean that on the clients or in this case the DHCP Server, both DNS entries must be resolved?

Am I correct?
