I just added a new bdc to my domain. I had a PDC and one BDC prior to this new server. I have been running wins on the PDC and the BDC, do I need to run wins on the new BDC as well? Should I run it on the new BDC? Are there any advantages/disadvantages to doing so?

thanks

How large is your network ?
You mentioned that you had 1 PDC and 1 BDC, both of them running WINS.
I don't think you need an additional WINS server, but I would remove WINS from your PDC and install WINS on your new BDC... Peter Van Eeckhoutte

thanks, I have a PDC, and now two BDCs, a couple of other NT servers that are not BDCs and we have about 300+ users located in physical location.

Since posting, I have read a caution about having too many wins servers, but no mention of moving it from the pdc.

thanks for any further suggestions.

it's better to let your PDC as clean as possible... it will speed up your user logons, and other things...
If you have a BDC, you might want to use this one as WINS server Peter Van Eeckhoutte

I have also seen posts in other user's groups that say it is best NOT to have WINS reside on the PDC. just a little FYI, I'll post more info when I find it.

Hi,

I just installed WINS on my BDC.
However, I wasn't able to browse the domain from my network neighbourhood unless I install NetBEUI on my client machine.
I tried configuring my TCP/IP settings to specify my WINS server on my client machine without installing NetBEUI. This doesn't work.
MUST NetBEUI work with WINS in order to browse the domain?
Strange??

Thanks in advance!
