Greetings,
I have recently been given the task of becoming "The Phone guy" for my company. Until two weeks ago I had never even seen a phone system so I was really lost and to an extent I still am. I have been doing lots of searching and reading here on Tek Tips and found must of my answers to my questions. You Tech's really know your stuff Thank you. Oh did I mention that "The Phone guy" before me was nice enough to take all the manuals for our phone system with him when he quit? Anyway I have been unable to find much on adding stations or ports for a voicemail system. We currently have a Nortel Meridian 8x24 system with DR5 software. 7 of the inbound lines are configured and 8 of the internal extensions/stations are installed. Last week they dropped off a Norstar voicemail system Norstar Startalk (385) or Module C at my desk and told me to install it. Oh and no docs on that either. The owner bought it off of eBay “cheap”. I plugged a wys50 terminal to it and powered up the unit. The unit has I assume the default password SYSMGR and I was able to navigate through the menus with no problem. Now the issue is how do I add a station / port for the voicemail system to connect up to the KSU. I have also read some where that with this VM system they recommend you to change the DN length on the VM and Phone system to match each other the recommended minimum length was 3 I believe. “How do you do that?” also if I change the DN length on the current phone system how is that going to affect the already configured extensions? Currently one can dial “22” and ring one of the girls in the billing office so I assume this means the DN length is currently set to 2.

Thank you for taking the time to read cry for HELP!!!

The voice mail will hook up to the system just like a phone would. If you change your DN length in the phone system it will add a 2 to the extensions (22 will become 222). The voice mail will do 2 digit but it recommended to use 3 incase you ever go above 99 mailboxes because unlike the phone system it will not just add a 2. You will have to out and rebuild every mailbox. Use FEATURE 983 to log into the vmail from a 7310 or 7324 when it is hooked to the system. Good luck.

You have a fun task ahead of you the first thing I would do is get some manual on the system I get mine from they have a small one time fee and you can download any manual you need.

second since you received the VM off ebay I would do a system reset feature 983 120000 press 1 then 734678255 this is assuming it was hooked to a system before that had 2 digit EXT other wise 1020000 then 1 ...

As far as hooking it to your system you can use any open port but I usually use the last port in the system so you dont have a skipped EXT in middle

As far as the DN goes unless you think your company is going to expand beyond the 99 limit you should be fine with 2 digit Ext setup

well good luck "the phone guy" :)

All,
Thank YOU very much for the input. I have a fun day ahead of me and with your input and help it should go much easier.
