I'm using win 2000 sp2 on a netware 4.11 network.

The printers are HP with jet direct cards but they use the novell print queues

i've just installed a pc from scratch and have updated it with all windows updates except for win 2k sp3

when i try and a printer it says 'could not connect to the printer. you either entered a printer name that was incorrect or the specified printer is no longer available. Click help for more information'

then it comes up with an error with spoolsv.exe

the thing is when i add the same printer to another pc it works fine.

we have 6 printers and none of them will add to this machine.

does anyone have any ideas?

Have you checked that these machines are all using the correct Novell client. These being Novell queues, check the IPX settings on the machine as well. These tend to work similarly to IP subnets, where 802.2 will only see 802.2 If set to auto detect frame type, it may still be picking up the wrong frame type somehow.

Also, can you logon to novell and share anything. Check that you have the microsoft client for novell installed, and the IPX/SPX protocol (if this is on the other machines)

Good luck

There are two IPX protocols available in windows, the IPX/SPX Compatable protocol from MS and the IPX/SPX protocol from Novell. I have had problems if the Novell protocol was not loaded.

Have you installed the File and Print Services for NetWare on the W2K machine ?

futuretech, I have myself tried to install this service that is available under Windows 95 (and 98?) but can not find it ANYWHERE under Windows 2000. Did they leave it out or what am I missing? Could it be I'm using the MS IPX Protocol and not the Novell and it won't let me install it?

Kevin

File & Print Services is part of Services for Netware. It now comes as a seperate package and is available from your Microsoft dealer. The latest version 5 is for W2k server and includes v4 for NT.

There is another thread on this site dealing with the spoolsv.exe problem which may be your real issue and also at this URL
Search for the spoolsv.exe on this site for more info, I found this website about an hour ago with Web Ferret and so far it is proving very handy !!

Good luck
