Please help! I have added a port to a vlan, but it is still showing down. Even putting a cable directly on the port from a laptop does not bring it up.

# config vlan 3 ports add 3/12
# save config

# sh vlan info ports 3

[can't paste results her, but it shows 3/12 as active member]

But still I am seeing admin "up" and operate "down". Is there someting missing? This is the first time to me to do this. I am on a new contract, and I am under pressure. I cleared the syntax with 3rd line before starting, but maybe we missed something. I compared the config to other ports nearby and see not config difference. Please help quickly.

thanks!

By your commands I'll assume this is an 8600.

What kind of port is it, are you sure you don't have a physical layer problem? Do you get a link light on one or both sides of the link?

Some configurations will give you a link on one side of a fiber interface but not the other, try enabling/disabling auto-negotiation:
config ethernet 3/12 auto-negotiate enable/disable

If none of the above work what does the output of these commands say?
show ports info state 3/12
show ports info interface 3/12
show ports info config 3/12
show ports info stg main 3/12

Thanks for the quick reply!!! Can't get hold of 3rd line support. We have a backlog of tickets and don't want company to look bad.

As I rethink this, it may not be a config issue at all. When I hook up the laptop to the switch with a standard ethernet cable, I get "media disconnected". Same happens with a different laptop and cable. Same happens in port 3/5.

Is this only a physical issue from the port to the laptop? Using cat5e UTP 4 pair patch cable. It's hard to believe that the cable or laptop could be an issue.

Here are the result of the commands you gave. Thanks VERY MUCH! Would appreciate further help if possible.

Any advice as to further troubleshooting/ problem resolution? Your help is appreciated.

Is this an 8616 module? If so its worth pointing out that the 8616TXE can only operate at 1000Mbps and Full Duplex. When I had these modules I always disabled auto-negotiate on both sides and set the speed/duplex to 1000/Full.

As you correctly note 1000BaseT uses all 4 pair in a cat5e cable so it sounds like you're OK there.

The commands didn't yield any clues that I can see, and as you say it's suspicious that more than one port does the same thing.

The card is a 8616GTE. Ports 2-4, 6, and 13-16 are active. There is no dhcp on the VLAN. But I'm not sure that's relevant. This morning I put an RJ45 loopback plug on both ports 5 and port 13 and they still didn't come up.

I'm going in circles trying to get internal support!

Could it still be in the configuration settings of the port?

If you have placed a loopback plug, and if stp is disabled. Your port probably is blocked.
Try a disable and enable.
All the other stuff seems fine.
But, is you portable 1 Gig ?

Thanks for all the input.

It turns out that the test method was faulty. The card has GB interfaces. To test with a laptop, a GB card on the laptop is required. To test with a loopback plug, the plug would have to have four wires instead of two.

Once we connected a laptop with a GB interface, we were able to make a connection.

thanks!
