One of our office PCs needed a MB replaced - MSI PN4 - which we couldn't find an exact replacement for quickly - so we bought a newer version - MSI PN7. Installed the PN7 and new CPU & memory and on reboot XP loaded fine but started finding all the new hardware on the PN7, then locked up. Tried reboot to "last Known Good Config" but that didn't work - Safe Mode didn't help and now it just loops during start up selecting any of the "7" XP startup options from F8. Gets about 50% loaded then reboots the PC to post and just lopps. Can't get a successful XP bootup to Windows desktop where I can load the new chipset drivers etc for the PN7 board.

Any ideas?

it probably can't find an essential driver as it still thinks it is running on a MSI PN4 ---- can you log the errors and put the drivers it can't find onto the HDD somehow

Amazed you got as far as you did :)

The technique for swapping MBs but keeping the same boot drive is documented on the microsoft website somewhere..... there IS a correct way to do this.... anyone?

There is even a FAQ on this here on Tek-Tips: faq602-6735

the only option I see at this time, would be to do a REPAIR INSTALL, which will leave all Software intact...
