Ok, involved in Definity for a long time. But I haven't added an IP phone to a S8700 and now is my chance.

Question: How does the system know to assign a particular extension to a IP Phone? I see the Ports say Sxxxxx. When adding a station and I select a IP type it put IP in the port fiels. Do I have to tell the system the MAC address of the phone somewhere and attach it to that extension?

Just input the phone type, if the phone type is the IP phone, the system will recognise it as IP phones, so the port shows Sxxxxx and you can not modify it, it's a virtual port for IP phones and IP trunk ports. Remember to add Authorise code. You needn't tell the system the MAC of the phones.

Then how does the system know to assign the extension to a particular phone without a MAC?

Where is add "Authorise code"

Do I just add the station, plug in the phone and do a TTI on the phone?

Thanks for you help!!

IP phone is different with analog/dagital phone, It has no physical port. You have to regist the phone to the extension, then the phone has the extension number. The authorise code can be added on the first page of add/change station xxxx, the item is Authorisation.
When you plug the IP phone, you need to input the IP address of phone/netmask/gateway/call server(IP address of C-Lan)/file server (upgrade firmware) or obtain these parameters form DHCP server. Then the phone will try to find file server to upgrade if possible. At last it will require you to input the Extension number and password to login, then it has the extension number.
You DO NOT need to consider the MAC

Have some quick questions on this one.. Does the IP adress for the phone have any limitations? Like does it need to be on the same subnet as the media server and what-not? And the IP adress of the C-lan, are you referring to a C-lan card on the media gateway?

Sorry for the noobish questions from my side, but the IP side is all new to me. (Actually, about 4 days. :) )

There's no IP address limitation for IP stations. But the IP address of IP station should communicate with C-lan no matter it is in the same subnet or not. C-lan is a kind of IP circuit pack on media gateway.

A TN799DP would be a good example of a CLAN circuit pack I take it?

Looks like I need some more help here.. sigh.. Keep getting Bad router? error message. This is what I did.. CallSV=IP address of C-lan card.
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.128 (from the ip interface screen in definity)
Router I set up as the gateway that is also in the ip interface screen for the c-lan card.
And gave the IP phone an IP address in the same subnet as the gateway cause if I didn't it would give me the subnet conflict error.

Any suggestions?

MCIPADD=198.xxx.108.43,198.xxx.211.200,MCPORT=1719,TFTPSRVR=198.xxx.107.32,TFTPDIR=\

I took out part of our addresses, but, this is what we have built into our DHCP. The first IP address is the first CLAN, the second one is the "failover" one. I think the system does a load balance anyway, so, you may find phones on the second CLAN regardless of it being the "second choice".

I would never use static IPs. DHCP works pretty well. The TFTPSRVR address is just a workstation that we have the Avaya TFTP server application running on. It's where the phone gets it's latest software and configs. We keep it turned off most of the time. So, if the phone can't get to it, it, just tries a bunch of times, times out, and, then provides dial tone.

If your hardcoding the phones, when the phone boots up, press the * to program. The # key is the enter key...

The IP Address is what you assinged: 10.X.X.X
The CallSvr will be from CLAN: 10.X.X.X
The CallSvrPort will be: 1719
The router is your default gateway: 10.X.X.1
The Subnet will be: 255.255.255.128
The FileSvr will be: TFTP Server address
The VLANID will be: 0 or if you're using one, populate that...

Thanks,
CJH

Thanks to all for your help. Got it set up for static earlier today and will work on the DHCP on monday. Just needed to get a feel for this that's all.

Worked like a charm. Got it to take priority to the voice vlan so we look good to go. Anyhoo, thanks to all that helped. You guys pointed me in the right direction when I needed it.
