Adding an attribute to ADLDS

Hoping someone here can point me in the right direction, preferably a step by step instruction of adding custom attributes to ADLDS.

I need to add some custom attributes so we can store and retrieve custom data for each user in ADLDS.

Through ADSI Edit that you can add an attribute, but having trouble successfully creating one.

I've been searching off and on for weeks and can't find anything. I would prefer to find something specific to ADLDS, not Active Directory.

Any help is appreciated.
